Maryann Oake is the Program Director of Radiography and Medical Imaging and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Vera Z. Dwyer College of Health Sciences at Indiana University South Bend. She holds a Master of Business Administration in Healthcare Administration from Indiana Wesleyan University (2015), a Bachelor of General Studies with a concentration in Math and Science from Indiana University South Bend, and an Associate’s of Radiography from Indiana University South Bend. Certified as a Registered Technologist in Radiography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (R.T.(R)(MR)), Oake teaches physics in the Radiography Program and physics, procedures, cross-sectional anatomy, and sectional pathology in the Medical Imaging Program. The programs she directs offer an Associate of Science in Radiologic Technology and a Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging Technology, focusing on the art and science of medical imaging for patient diagnosis.
In her career at Indiana University South Bend, Oake serves as Director and Coordinator in Medical Imaging, contributing to accreditation efforts by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. She pioneered innovative teaching strategies, including the 'Poor Pete' case study series in Multiplanar Anatomy and Pathology courses (R472 and R473), where students use collaborative online discussions to diagnose cartoon characters' conditions with medical imaging, fostering critical reasoning, hypothesis generation, and peer interaction. Oake led the development of the energized radiologic lab in the $10 million Dwyer Healthcare Simulation Center, allowing students to practice live x-ray exposures on phantoms, improving positioning, image evaluation, and patient safety skills while minimizing radiation risks. She has guided study abroad experiences, such as the 'Global Experiences in Radiologic Technology' trip to Germany, visiting Berlin's hospitals, Remscheid—the birthplace of X-ray discoverer Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen—and Koblenz for cultural immersion and professional networking. Her dedication to teaching excellence earned her the Excellence in Teaching with Technology Award (2018), Trustees' Teaching Award (2022), and Faculty Legacy Award (2024).
