Dr. Medha Sarkar is the Chair and Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), where she provides leadership within the College of Basic and Applied Sciences. She earned her B.S. in Computer Science and Master of Computer Applications (M.C.A.) from Sardar Patel University in India, and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Queen’s University in Canada. Her doctoral research focused on programming languages and graph grammars. Prior to her current roles, her diverse educational background spans institutions in India and Canada, shaping her expertise in software engineering and related fields.
At MTSU, Dr. Sarkar teaches software engineering at undergraduate and graduate levels and coordinates the Real World Projects program, through which students complete full software development lifecycles for real clients. Her research centers on software engineering applications for human-computer interaction (HCI) systems, including collaborations with Vanderbilt University’s School of Engineering and Kennedy Center for Human Development. These efforts develop virtual reality and robotic systems for interventions in autism, schizophrenia, and dementia. With 30 publications and 255 citations, notable works include "Graph Rewriting for User State-Based Dialogue Adaptation in Real-Time: An Application in Personalized Interview Training" (2025), "Design of an Interview Script Authoring Tool for a Job Interview Training Simulator Using Graph Transformations" (2023), "Visualizing the Road Ahead: Human-Centered Dashboard Design for an Individualized Driving Simulator" (2024), "A Pilot Study Assessing Performance and Visual Attention of Teenagers with ASD in a Novel Adaptive Driving Simulator" (2017), and "A Novel Virtual Reality Driving Environment for Autism Intervention" (2013). She also serves on the MTSU ADVANCE Internal Advisory Board.
