Mereana Pawa serves as Kaihautū Māori and Māori Lead in the Educational Assessment Research Unit (EARU) within the University of Otago College of Education, under the Humanities Division. As a Senior Professional Practice Fellow, she provides essential leadership on Māori matters for the unit, which operates under contract to the Ministry of Education for educational assessment research projects. Pawa's documented qualifications comprise a Diploma in Teaching (DipTchg) and Tohu Matauranga Māori, with the latter designating her as a Māori Literacy Specialist according to the University of Otago Calendar for 2022. Her position in EARU positions her at the intersection of Māori perspectives and national educational assessment efforts.
Mereana Pawa contributes significantly to the Curriculum Insights project as Kaihautū Māori, a joint initiative between the University of Otago and the New Zealand Council for Educational Research aimed at analyzing curriculum implementation in New Zealand schools. She has supported recruitment for roles such as Kairangahau Māori in the College of Education, serving as a primary contact alongside figures like Professor David Berg, Co-Director of EARU. Pawa has actively participated in scholarly conferences, including the 2014 Australian Association for Research in Education (AARE) conference, where she co-presented the abstract 'Communities of Practice: Whakawhanaungatanga' with Fiona McGrath, Ngawaiata Evans, and Ella Newbold.
