Dr Monica Behrend is an Adjunct Lecturer in Education Futures in the School of Education, College of Education, Behavioural and Social Sciences at Adelaide University. With 47 years of experience as an educator, she retired in 2021 after serving as Lecturer in research education with the Research Education team at the University of South Australia. Previously, she worked as a Lecturer (Learning Adviser), mostly in the Division of Information Technology, Engineering and the Environment at UniSA. Her early career encompassed eight years teaching secondary Mathematics, Science, and English as a Second Language in Australia and the Pacific, followed by nine years training secondary teachers at the University of Papua New Guinea, University of the South Pacific (Fiji), and Solomon Islands College of Higher Education as an Australia Award consultant, collaborating to re-establish a Secondary Teacher Education program. Behrend completed her PhD in Education in 2012 at the University of South Australia. Her thesis, 'Mediating second language writing through online resources: sociocultural influences on design and use,' was a sociocultural study of transnational students in Hong Kong using online resources for academic writing in a third-year computing course.
Behrend's research specializations encompass enhancing research and doctoral writing outcomes for international and English as an Additional Language higher degree by research students, sociocultural influences on writing and online resources, and student learning in higher education. As an adjunct, she remains eligible to co-supervise Masters and PhD candidates at Adelaide University and currently co-supervises a Doctor of Philosophy student on second language acquisition for first-generation school-age Sri Lankan migrant students in the Australian education system.
