Dr Nathan James Crane is a Lecturer in the School of Architecture and Built Environment within the College of Creative Arts, Design and Humanities at Adelaide University. A design thinker passionate about elevating design's impact for people inside and outside the profession, he brings over ten years of experience as a design educator and academic. His teaching practice focuses on fostering students' understanding of design's role in shaping experiences of the world. Crane has held academic leadership roles including Program Coordinator and Acting Academic Director in higher education settings, and worked as a sessional tutor and lecturer at the University of South Australia. He earned a Bachelor of Interior Architecture (Honours 1) from the University of South Australia (2009-2012), a Doctor of Philosophy in Architecture from the same institution (2013-2018), and a Master of Education (Learning and Leadership) from the University of Technology Sydney (2021-2023). Currently, he teaches courses such as ARCH 1021 Design, Culture and Environment, ARCH 1031 Interior Architecture Studies, ARCH 1035 Interior Architecture Studio 2 (Materials and Practices), ARCH 2056 Theory of the Modern Interior, ARCH 2021 Contemporary Design Theory, and ARCH 3050 Architectural Design Studio (Integrated). He is eligible to co-supervise Masters and PhD students and available for media comment.
Crane's research spans theory, design education, and technology's impact on spatial imagination, with projects bridging historical and contemporary practices to provide resources for engaging Australia's design heritage. Interests include writing as spatial practice, emerging design histories, expansive design pedagogies, public and media perceptions of the design industry, alternative design and visual art processes, luxury retail branding, and post-structuralist literary practices. An award-winning writer and editor, he has published in Artichoke, The Adelaide Review, FORM Journal, LUXURY, Educate, and Marmalade, with key works such as Africola Canteen by Claire Markwick-Smith (2023), Projekt: Sketch (2019), Reviving Adelaide's Darling (2018), City in colour (2018), Harnessing the power of Indigenous design (2018), Holding out for a hero shot (2017), A change of plan (2017), and Sustainability and strategy in Adelaide's green infrastructure (2017). He chairs the Board of the South Australian Fashion Industry Association and judges design awards, offering commentary on Australian design themes, practices, and studios.
