About Nicole

Dr. Nicole Bromfield serves as Dean of the College of Health and Human Performance at East Carolina University, a position she assumed on July 1, 2024. She is also a professor at the university. With a 25-year career in academia that includes extensive international experience, Bromfield previously held the role of associate professor and associate dean for academic affairs at the University of Houston’s Graduate College of Social Work. In that capacity, she oversaw 30 percent enrollment growth and led the college through a full program reaccreditation. Earlier appointments include assistant professor at United Arab Emirates University from 2010 to 2016 and administrative positions at Virginia Commonwealth University as director of student services and student services coordinator.

Bromfield earned a Ph.D. in public policy and administration with a specialization in health policy from Virginia Commonwealth University. She holds an M.S.W. with a concentration in community organization and a B.A. in sociology and anthropology, awarded summa cum laude, both from West Virginia University. She served as a Fulbright Research and Teaching Scholar for 20 months at the University of Namibia. Bromfield has conducted research projects in the United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh, India, Namibia, and other countries. She co-authored the book “From Intercountry Adoption to Global Surrogacy: A Human Rights History and New Fertility Frontiers.” Her research focuses on topics including global child wellbeing, women and children, qualitative methods, and human trafficking. She has completed academic leadership training through programs at Harvard University, the Council on Social Work Education, the National Association of Deans and Directors, and the University of Houston.
