Challenges students to grow and excel.
Dr. Nurul Mohd Thiyahuddin serves as a Professional Practice Fellow in the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Otago, contributing to teaching and clinical practice within the Oral Diagnostic and Surgical Sciences department. She completed her Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (DClinDent) at the University of Otago in 2019, specializing in Special Needs Dentistry. Her doctoral thesis, titled "Yeast species in the oral cavities of older people," investigated the prevalence of yeast species, particularly Candida, in elderly individuals residing in their own homes versus rest homes. This research highlighted differences in oral yeast colonization patterns among older populations, providing insights into oral health challenges associated with aging.
Thiyahuddin's research focuses on oral microbiology, specifically yeast species and Candida strains in the oral cavities of older people, including the microevolution of Candida albicans in individuals with low salivary flow. She has authored or co-authored several publications, including the 2019 abstract "Yeast species in the oral cavities of older people" in the New Zealand Dental Journal (with E. Lamping, A. Rich, and R.D. Cannon), a 2019 conference contribution "Candida species and strains in the oral cavities of the elderly" in Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology & Oral Radiology, and the 2021 abstract "Microevolution of Candida albicans strains in older people with low salivary flow" in the same journal (with A.M. Rich, E. Lamping, and R.D. Cannon). Her thesis is archived in the University of Otago's OUR Archive. During her DClinDent, she was involved in the Sir John Walsh Research Institute's molecular microbiology program. She has also acted as an advisor or supervisor for doctoral theses, such as "The effects of stroke on oral function and oral health" by E.C. Cheong. Additionally, she presented her research at events like the Sir John Walsh Research Institute Research Day 2019 and the University of Otago Student Research Symposium.
