Professor Patrick Chau serves as Provost and Chair Professor in Information Systems and Business Analytics at Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University (BNBU), within the Business & Economics domain. He obtained his PhD in Business Administration from the University of Western Ontario, Canada. His primary research interests lie in IT adoption and electronic commerce, resulting in more than 100 publications in top-tier Information Systems journals. Professor Chau's scholarly impact is substantial, with over 30,000 Google Scholar citations and an h-index of 62 as of February 2024, alongside more than 12,000 Scopus citations and an h-index of 44. He consistently ranks on Elsevier’s List of the World’s Top 2% Scientists.
Professor Chau has an illustrious career trajectory marked by leadership roles across renowned institutions. Prior to BNBU, he was Vice-Provost for Research and Knowledge Exchange and Lee Dak Sum Chair Professor in Information Systems and Operations Management at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China. He spent nearly two decades at The University of Hong Kong, holding positions such as Director of the School of Business, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics, and Padma and Hari Harilela Professor in Strategic Information Management. Additionally, he served as Qiushi Chair Professor at Zhejiang University and was awarded the Chang Jiang Scholars Programme Chair Professorship by the Ministry of Education in 2010.
In recognition of his contributions, Professor Chau was elected President of the Association for Information Systems (AIS) in 2021-2022, becoming the first Chinese scholar to lead the organization since its inception in 1994. He received the AIS Fellow Award in 2013 and the prestigious AIS LEO Award in 2025, a lifetime achievement accolade. Professor Chau has significantly influenced academic publishing as Emeritus Editor-in-Chief of Information & Management—elevating its two-year impact factor from 1.84 in 2014 to 10.33 in 2021—Senior Editor of the Journal of the Association for Information Systems, Co-editor of Electronic Commerce Research & Applications, and Global Editor of DATABASE for Advances in Information Systems.
