Associate Professor Paul Ali serves at the Melbourne Law School, University of Melbourne, as an Associate Professor, Director of Studies for Banking and Finance Law, and member of the Melbourne Centre of Commercial Law. Before entering academia, he spent several years working in the Banking & Finance and Corporate groups of two major Australian law firms and acted as a consultant to a leading international corporate governance advisory firm. His academic and research focus is on banking and finance law, corporate law, and related fields. Paul Ali has authored numerous books on key topics in these areas, including credit derivatives, market-based environmental instruments, personal property security interests, securitisation, and the law of secured finance. His doctoral thesis, published as Marshalling of Securities by Oxford University Press in 1999, has been cited authoritatively in courts such as the Victorian Supreme Court, the Victorian Court of Appeal, the United Kingdom High Court, and the United Kingdom Supreme Court. He also co-edited the book International Corporate Governance after Sarbanes-Oxley, published by John Wiley & Sons in 2006 and subsequently translated into Chinese by China Modern Economic Publishing House.
Ali contributes to the scholarly community through his membership on the editorial boards of the Australian Business Law Review, the Capital Markets Law Journal, the Company and Securities Law Journal, and the Journal of Banking and Finance Law and Practice. His research has addressed practical issues in commercial law, including consumer credit, financial hardship, insurance practices, and penalties under ASIC legislation. Notable projects include an ARC Discovery Project on financial exclusion, poor insurer practices, and consumer protection. Through his publications and editorial work, Paul Ali has made significant contributions to the understanding and development of banking, finance, and corporate law in Australia and internationally.
