Rajat Ganguly is a Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Studies in the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences within the College of Law, Arts and Social Sciences at Murdoch University. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science and International Relations from Tulane University between August 1989 and May 1996. Ganguly's academic interests encompass international security, international relations, defence studies, ethnic conflict, terrorism, armed insurgency, Great Power politics, Indo-Pacific strategic issues, and politics in India and South Asia. He teaches courses in global security and international relations and has supervised doctoral theses, including those on Iran's enmity with the United States and the torture taboo.
Ganguly's scholarly output includes several books and numerous chapters and articles. Notable books are Autonomy and Ethnic Conflict in South and South-East Asia (Routledge, 2012), Ethnic Conflict and Secessionism in South and Southeast Asia: Causes, Dynamics, Solutions (2003), Understanding Ethnic Conflict (2010), Ethnicity and Nation-Building in South Asia (2001), and Kin State Intervention in Ethnic Conflicts: Lessons from South Asia (1998). Key recent publications feature the chapter Indian Foreign Policy Under Narendra Modi (2026), South Asia (2023), Sri Lanka (2023), India's Defence Production Capability (2022), India and the Ukraine War (2022), Jihadi Terrorism in South and Southeast Asia (2019), India's Military: Evolution, Modernisation and Transformation (2015), and The Fire Within: Naxalite Insurgency Violence in India (2007). His research has garnered 494 citations and over 51,000 reads. Ganguly previously served as Program Chair in Security, Terrorism and Counterterrorism Studies at Murdoch University. He holds editorial leadership as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Asian Security and International Affairs since 2014 and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of World Affairs: Voice of the Global South.
