About Robin

Dr Robin Lee is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Civil and Natural Resources Engineering at the University of Canterbury. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering with First Class Honours (2009–2012) and a PhD in Earthquake Engineering (2013–2017), both from the University of Canterbury. His doctoral thesis developed a 3D Canterbury seismic velocity model and investigated systematic effects through hybrid broadband ground motion simulation.

Dr Lee’s research focuses on engineering seismology, ground-motion modelling, seismic hazard analysis, geotechnical earthquake engineering, and applications of high-performance computing and machine learning. He completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Canterbury (2017–2019) before his appointment as Lecturer in Geotechnical Engineering in 2019. He has received several honours, including a Rutherford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2017, a Marsden Fund Fast-Start Grant in 2021, the Faculty of Engineering Emerging Teaching Award in 2024, a Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake Biennial Grant in 2025, and the Ivan Skinner Award in 2026. His work has contributed to the 2022 New Zealand National Seismic Hazard Model and the TS 1170.5 design standard.
