Professor Roderick Murray-Smith is a Professor of Computing Science in the School of Computing Science at the University of Glasgow, a position he has held since January 2007. He previously served as Reader from 2003 to 2006 and Lecturer from 1999 to 2002 in the same department. Earlier in his career, he was a Researcher at Daimler-Benz Research in Berlin from 1990 to 1997, Research Lecturer and EU-funded Marie-Curie Fellow at the Institute of Mathematical Modelling, Technical University of Denmark from 1997 to 1999, and part-time Senior Researcher at the Hamilton Institute, NUI Maynooth from 2002 to 2008. He also visited Prof. Michael Jordan's group at MIT's Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences from October 1994 to January 1995. Murray-Smith earned a B.Eng. (2.1 Hons.) in Information Engineering in 1990 and a Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1994, both from the University of Strathclyde. He was Director of SICSA, the Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance, from 2012 to 2014, and founding Head of the Information, Data and Analysis Section in the School of Computing Science.
His research lies at the intersection of machine learning, interaction design, and control theory, encompassing closed-loop data science, machine learning in science, mobile human-computer interaction, dynamic systems, probabilistic inference, Gaussian processes, gesture recognition, and brain-computer interfaces. He leads prominent funded projects, including the ERC Advanced Grant DIFAI: Designing Interaction Freedom via Active Inference (2023-2029, €2.5M), EPSRC grant for Quantum Imaging for Monitoring of Wellbeing and Disease in Communities (EP/T021020/1, 2020-2025, £5.65M), QuantIC Quantum Technology Hub in Quantum Imaging (EPSRC, 2016-2024), and Closed-loop Data Science (EPSRC, 2018-2023, £3M). Murray-Smith has edited books such as Switching and Learning in Feedback Systems (Springer, 2005), Haptic Human-Computer Interaction (Springer, 2001), and Multiple Model Approaches to Modelling and Control (Taylor & Francis, 1997). Key publications include Active Inference and Human-Computer Interaction (ACM TOCHI, 2025), Intermittent Active Inference (Entropy, 2026), and Incremental Guided Attention Fusion for Depth Super-Resolution (Sensors, 2025). He collaborates with industry partners including Nokia, Samsung, Bang & Olufsen, and Microsoft, and served on Nokia's Scientific Advisory Board and the EC-COST Action IC0601 management committee on Sonic Interaction Design.
