Dr. Ruby Lewis is a Professor of English at Grambling State University, serving in the Department of English and Foreign Languages. She holds a B.S. and M.Ed. from Southern University, along with a Ph.D. from Kansas State University. For decades, Dr. Lewis has been instrumental in training Grambling State University students in the essentials of proper grammar and composition. Her expertise in grammar and composition is legendary within the department, where fellow faculty members routinely defer to her judgment on these critical areas of English studies. Dr. Lewis's courses are renowned for their toughness, demanding high standards from students, yet this rigorous approach has proven invaluable. Numerous former students return to the university years after their graduation to personally thank her for the foundational writing skills she instilled, which have supported their academic and professional successes throughout their lives. Her enduring influence on student development underscores her pivotal role in the Literature faculty at Grambling State University.
Dr. Lewis has also made a lasting contribution to rhetorical education and departmental resources through her editorial work. She served as the general editor of the textbook Black Orpheus: Rhetoric and Readings, which was first published in 1996 and released in a second edition in 2002. Demonstrating extraordinary generosity, Dr. Lewis donated approximately $60,000 from the proceeds of this publication directly to the English Department. These funds have been purposefully directed toward enhancing various aspects of academic life, including the provision of academic scholarships for deserving students, scholastic awards recognizing outstanding achievement, scholarly programs and events to enrich intellectual discourse, acquisition of computer equipment to modernize facilities, support for faculty travel to conferences and professional engagements, and initiatives for professional development to advance teaching and research capabilities. This substantial philanthropic effort highlights Dr. Lewis's deep commitment to elevating the quality of education and opportunities available to both students and faculty in the Department of English and Foreign Languages at Grambling State University.
