Dr. Sadasivam Karuppannan serves as Senior Lecturer in the School of Architecture and Built Environment, College of Creative Arts, Design and Humanities at Adelaide University. He holds a PhD from the University of Melbourne and a Master of Urban and Regional Planning from CEPT University, India. His professional career includes positions as Senior Lecturer in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of South Australia from 2015 to the present and Lecturer in the same field from 2000 to 2014. Karuppannan's research focuses on urban and regional planning, housing policy, housing the ageing population, development assessment, planning in developing countries, and sustainability. Additional interests include ageing and older people, geospatial information systems, housing markets, development and management, strategic metropolitan and regional planning, urban policy, energy consumption, and applications of geographical information systems in planning, as well as regional development assessment, planning law and ethics.
Karuppannan has been awarded the Endeavour Research Fellowship from the Government of Australia in 2009 while at Anna University, Chennai, India, and the Overseas Postgraduate Research Scholarship from the Government of Australia in 1996 at the University of Melbourne. His key publications demonstrate significant contributions to the field. Recent works include 'Evaluation of Ecological Sustainability Criteria of Urban Green Spaces in Adelaide Metropolitan Area' (Urban Science, 2025, with Teimouri, Sivam, Gu), 'Exploring international perspective on factors affecting urban socio-ecological sustainability by green space planning' (Sustainability, 2023, with Teimouri, Sivam, Gu, Yenneti), and 'Social sustainability with Urban Green Space (UGS) planning' (Journal of Advances in Humanities and Social Sciences, 2019, with Teimouri, Sivam, Gu). Earlier publications encompass 'Non-transport household energy consumption in Adelaide and Melbourne' (Local Environment, 2016, with Han), 'Climate induced migration: lessons from Bangladesh' (The International Journal of Climate Change: Impacts and Responses, 2014, with Kellett, Ahsan), 'Urban green space and urban biodiversity: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia' (Journal of Sustainable Development, 2014, with Baharuddin, Sivam, Daniels), 'Role of state and market in housing delivery for low-income groups in India' (Journal of Housing and the Built Environment, 2002, with Sivam), and 'Spatial data infrastructures for cities in developing countries. Lessons from the Bangkok experience' (Cities, 2000, with Bishop et al.). These works address critical issues in housing affordability, neighbourhood design, cultural heritage, and environmental sustainability in urban contexts.
