Santiago Pujol is Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Canterbury. He holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Universidad Nacional de Colombia (1995), an M.S. in Civil Engineering from Purdue University (1997), and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Purdue University (2002). Prior to joining the University of Canterbury in 2020, he served as Project Engineer at Wiss, Janney, Elstner and Associates Inc. from 2002 to 2005, and progressed through academic ranks at Purdue University’s Lyles School of Civil Engineering, becoming Assistant Professor in 2005, Associate Professor in 2011, and Professor in 2015 until 2019.
His research focuses on the seismic performance of reinforced concrete structures, including drift capacity of columns, shear strength, effects of high-strength reinforcement, and post-earthquake damage assessment. Pujol has received numerous honors, including the Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize from the American Society of Civil Engineers (2012), fellowship in the American Concrete Institute (2012), the Arthur J. Boase Award from ACI (2023), and multiple teaching and research awards from Purdue University. He is the incoming Director of Te Hiranga Rū QuakeCoRE and has contributed extensively to the field through numerous peer-reviewed publications on topics such as the behavior of reinforced concrete elements under cyclic loading and seismic vulnerability of buildings.
