Scott Hammond earned his PhD in Organizational Communication from the University of Utah in 1997, completing his dissertation titled "Communication and the New Science of Complexity: A Paradigmatic Critique." His academic journey equipped him with deep insights into communication dynamics, complexity theory, and organizational behavior, laying the foundation for his distinguished career.
At Utah Valley University, Hammond advanced from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor of Business Management in the Woodbury School of Business. He served as Interim Chair and Department Head of Business Management from 2008 to 2011, managing a department of 23 faculty, budgets, program reviews, and personnel matters. Between 2005 and 2008, as Assistant Academic Vice President, he spearheaded pivotal projects including the Case Statement for University Status and the academic self-study for NCAA compliance, earning the highest award given to faculty and staff at Utah Valley University for his instrumental role in achieving university designation. Hammond's research focuses on organizational communication, dialogue as social self-organization, highly reliable teams, work-family conflict, workplace forgiveness, faculty productivity, complex problem-solving, and ethics in higher education. Key publications include "Dialogue as Social Self-Organization: An Introduction," "The Complexification of Work-Family Conflict Theory: A Critical Realist Perspective" (2005, with Susan R. Madsen), "We (Still) Need a World of Scholar-Leaders: 25 Years of Reframing Education" (2004, with J. B. Ritchie), "Forgiveness as a Workplace Intervention: The Literature and a Proposed Framework," "Going From Zero to Ninety in Faculty Research Productivity," "Seven Operational Characteristics of Complex Problem Solving" (2020), and "Highly Reliable Teams in Search and Rescue: Seven Characteristics of Excellence" (2020). He has authored books such as "Lessons of the Lost: Wayfinding in the Wilderness" and "Highly Reliable Teams: When Failure Is Not an Option" (2025). Renowned as an author, consultant, and speaker, Hammond has delivered public lectures, podcasts, and workshops on leadership and reliability in high-stakes settings. He currently holds the position of Clinical Professor of Management at Utah State University's Jon M. Huntsman School of Business.
