Associate Professor Sharon Lewis serves as an academic in the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Melbourne and as a Senior Research Fellow and Senior Research Officer in the Reproductive Epidemiology Group at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute. Her academic background includes a BSc, Graduate Diploma in Genetic Counselling, Master of Public Health, and PhD. Lewis's research specializations encompass the long-term health outcomes of children conceived through assisted reproductive technologies (ART), including IVF, sperm and egg donation, embryo donation, and preimplantation genetic testing; perinatal outcomes following prenatal genomic diagnosis of fetal copy number variants; and neurodevelopmental effects of low-to-moderate prenatal alcohol exposure. She leads investigations using cohorts such as the Asking Questions about Alcohol in pregnancy (AQUA) study and the Prenatal Abnormalities and Loss of pregnancy in Melbourne (PALM) cohort.
Lewis is the Director of the Master of Genomics and Health and Principal Coordinator of the Graduate Diploma in Genomics and Health at the University of Melbourne. She teaches subjects including Healthcare Research - Principles and Designs and has received recognition for outstanding student satisfaction scores from the Department of Medical Education. Key publications include 'Clinical outcomes following preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic conditions: a systematic review of observational studies' (American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, 2025), 'IVF success rates in individuals accessing preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic conditions (PGT-M)' (Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics, 2025), 'Perinatal outcomes after a prenatal diagnosis of a fetal copy number variant' (BMC Pediatrics, 2024), 'Associations between low-moderate prenatal alcohol exposure and neurodevelopment' (Neurotoxicology and Teratology, 2024), and 'Low to moderate prenatal alcohol exposure and neurodevelopment' (Scientific Reports, 2024). With 114 publications and over 2500 citations, her work informs clinical practice in reproductive genetics and paediatrics.
