Dr. Shelley Caswell Moore is a Professor in the School of Nursing at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), contributing to the College of Behavioral and Health Sciences. She earned a baccalaureate degree in nursing from the State University of New York in 1981, a Master’s degree in nursing administration from Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida, in 1987, and a PhD in Health Sciences with a concentration in international health education and research from Trident University in Cypress, California, in 2013. Possessing over four decades of experience in the nursing profession, Dr. Moore has devoted her academic career to nursing education, prioritizing hands-on learning opportunities and student-centered pedagogical approaches.
Dr. Moore's research interests include the staff nurse work environment, student nurse learning environment, critical thinking, student empathy and willingness to work with older adults and those with dementia, and the effects of simulation on teamwork. She serves on the faculty for Aging Studies and is a member of the Positive Aging Consortium at MTSU. Dr. Moore initiated a partnership between MTSU’s School of Nursing and the nonprofit Mindful Care, allowing students in her Health and Gerontology course to accumulate volunteer hours through practical engagements that cultivate empathy for adults with cognitive challenges, enhance communication skills, boost self-confidence, and provide real-world experiential learning beyond conventional clinical settings. Her publications encompass 'Nursing Student Perceptions of Structural Empowerment' (2017), 'Clostridium difficile' (2017), 'Using Simulation to Cross-Train Staff and Build Effective Teams' (2018), 'Enteral nutrition in critically ill adults: Literature review of protocols' (2019), and book reviews such as 'Aging our Way: Lessons for Living From 85 and Beyond' by Meika Loe (2015) and 'Ageing and Older Adult Mental Health: Issues and Implications for Practice' edited by Patrick Ryan and Barry J.
