Sonja Yow serves as Interim Director and Associate Professor in the School of Education at Eastern Kentucky University. She earned an Ed.D. from the University of Kentucky, an I.M.A. from the University of South Carolina, and a B.A. from the University of South Carolina. A National Board certified teacher, Dr. Yow brings over 22 years of teaching experience at K-12 and university levels. Previously, she was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, where she focused on improving teaching practices and student learning outcomes through evidence-based strategies.
Dr. Yow's research interests encompass social studies education, educator preparation, and qualitative research. Her publications include Townsend, J. S., Hodge, C., Yow, S., & Cox, W. (2020), 'Using a Balanced Formative and Summative Assessment Model of Teaching to Improve Student Learning Outcomes,' Pedagogicon Conference Proceedings; and Hodge, C., Cox, W., Yow, S., & Townsend, S. (2019), 'Using the Schoolgrounds and Drones to Stimulate Second-Graders’ Understanding of Maps and the Map-Making Process,' NAPDS. She received the College of Education Faculty Teaching Award and the Inclusive Excellence in Teaching Award from Eastern Kentucky University in 2020-2021. Dr. Yow is affiliated with the National Council for the Social Studies, National Council for Geographic Education, and American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education.
