Mr. Stefan Kowalski serves as Senior Lecturer in Clinical Pharmacy Practice within the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, College of Health, at Adelaide University. He is the Program Director for the postgraduate suite of clinical pharmacy programs and teaches across numerous undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacy courses. Kowalski coordinates key courses such as PHAR-5033 Medicine Management Clerkship and Clinical Pharmacy Research Project. Previously, he was affiliated with the University of South Australia, School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences, where he led the Advanced Pharmacy Practice training program. His qualifications include a Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm), Master of Applied Science (MAppSc), and Certified Geriatric Pharmacist (CGP) designation. Kowalski has a long-standing career in pharmacy practice and education, contributing to clinical training and hospital pharmacy services.
Kowalski's scholarly output includes over 30 peer-reviewed publications spanning clinical pharmacy topics, including antimicrobial stewardship, geriatric pharmacotherapy, deprescribing, medication safety, and inappropriate prescribing. Notable publications are "Antimicrobial Prescribing in a Regional Hospital: Impact on Prescribing Through Collaboration with an On-Site Clinical Pharmacy Service" (2022), co-authored with M. Tantiongco and others; "Evaluating Smoking Cessation Service at an Emergency Department Clinical Observation Unit" (2022); "Safety of continuous antibiotic infusions administered through an Australian hospital in the home service: A pilot study" (2017); "Medication regimen complexity and prevalence of potentially inappropriate medicines in older patients after hospitalisation" (2017); "Pharmacy students’ and pharmacists’ perceptions about geriatric pharmacotherapy education" (2017); "The Feasibility of a Patient-Centered Deprescribing Process to Reduce Inappropriate Use of Proton Pump Inhibitors" (2015); "The role and utility of measuring red blood cell methotrexate polyglutamate concentrations in inflammatory arthropathies - A systematic review" (2015); "Plasma Potassium Concentration Changes Associated with Trimethoprim used for Urinary Tract Infections" (2010); "Inappropriate prescribing in hospitalised Australian elderly as determined by the STOPP criteria" (2012); and "Prevalence of Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use in Elderly Hospitalised Patients" (2011). Earlier contributions include research on transdermal fentanyl for postoperative pain, such as "The efficacy of transdermal fentanyl in the treatment of postoperative pain: A double-blind comparison of fentanyl and placebo systems" (1990) and "Fentanyl blood concentration-analgesic response relationship in the treatment of postoperative pain" (1988). His work has received over 1,200 citations on ResearchGate. Kowalski serves on the Board of Directors of the Board of Pharmacy Specialties, re-appointed for a second term in 2021, and has been associated with the Journal of Pharmacy Practice and Research editorial team.
