Mr. Steve Kelly serves as Lecturer in Interior Construction and Digital at the School of Architecture and Built Environment, College of Creative Arts, Design and Humanities, Adelaide University. He acts as Course Coordinator for Interior Architecture Construction Principles (BUIL 1019), Interior Construction and Materials (BUIL 1020), Digital Media (COMP 2016), Interior Architecture Studio 3 (Multi-Media) (ARCH 2047), and Interior Architecture Studio 6 (Workplace Environments) (ARCH 3058). In recent years, he has taught courses including Digital Processes and Application (COMP 3027). Bringing extensive professional experience, Steve worked as an interior designer and 3D modeller on medium- to large-scale commercial, residential, and health care projects. He holds a Graduate Diploma in Education Studies (Digital Learning), which allows him to blend digital learning methodologies with his design and creativity knowledge. Described as a passionate educator in the School of Art, Architecture and Design, he leads a multi-disciplinary study tour in alternate years to reimagine post-quake Christchurch.
Steve Kelly's research focuses on simulation, simulacra, and representation; design cognition; and the understanding, appraisal, and process of design, particularly the legibility of the plan, setting, scene, and the search for better intentional habitats. He investigates modelling as a process, emphasizing the pedagogical integration of digital technologies to enhance exploration of shape and form. Further interests cover cyberculture, new media, genre studies, plot holes, and file sharing, influenced by authors such as Neil Postman, Clay Shirky, and Jerold J. Abrams. His scholarly output includes the journal article 'The project parasite' in Place (July 2011). Notable conference papers are 'Keeping everyone OnTask: gauging the impact of personalised feedback through academic case studies' (ASCILITE 2018, with L. Lim, S. Barker, A. Fudge); 'Spatial augmented reality support for design of complex physical environments' (IEEE PERCOM Workshops 2011, with B.H. Thomas et al.); 'BIM-plementation: a new model for collaborative design' (45th ANZAScA Conference 2011); and 'Student, educator and industry: reconciling digital technologies' (Architectural Science Conference 2010). Creative works include 'Do electric crows fly over Adelaide' (2013, with T.E. Mical) and 'Photosynthesis' (2009). He co-curated the exhibition 'Setting a place at the table' (2009, with H.J. Moss et al.).
