Subodh Bhat, Ph.D., serves as a Professor of Marketing in the Business & Economics faculty at San Francisco State University’s Lam Family College of Business, where he has been a faculty member since 1993. He earned his Ph.D. in Marketing with an emphasis in Statistics from the University of Georgia in 1992. Bhat primarily teaches marketing strategy and brand management to M.B.A. students and has also been a visiting scholar at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His career at San Francisco State University reflects a dedication to both teaching excellence and scholarly research in key areas of marketing.
Bhat’s research specializations and academic interests include brand management, controversial advertising, advertising effects, marketing strategy, entrepreneurship, brands and branding, advertising, high-tech marketing, brand disasters, Indian entrepreneurs’ success in Silicon Valley, high-tech entrepreneurship, and consumer behavior. He has published several articles in prominent journals such as the Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Advertising, Journal of Consumer Marketing, and Journal of Marketing Theory and Practice. From 2009 to 2016, Bhat was a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the Journal of Advertising. As an expert in brands and brand management, he has commented widely in national media on corporate branding, marketing choices, and branding disasters. His empirical work includes surveys gauging reactions to ads featuring mixed-race couples, contributing to discussions on advertising representation and consumer responses. Bhat will be on leave during Spring 2026.
