Sven Trenholm serves as Adjunct Senior Lecturer in Mathematics Education at Adelaide University and has been affiliated with the University of South Australia since October 2013, initially as Lecturer and later as Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the Education Futures division. His academic qualifications include a PhD in Mathematics Education from Loughborough University in the United Kingdom, an MSc with Distinction in Curriculum Design and Instructional Technology from the State University of New York at Albany in the United States, a Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary Mathematics), and a BSc in Pure Mathematics, both from McGill University in Canada. Before relocating to Australia, Trenholm accumulated over 13 years of full-time mathematics teaching experience at both secondary and tertiary levels, including a tenured position across three State University of New York community colleges.
Trenholm's research specializes in mathematics education and educational technology, with a focus on fostering mathematical thinking through technologically-mediated environments, including fully online courses and recorded lecture videos. His scholarship has produced 23 peer-reviewed publications garnering 551 citations, featured in prominent journals such as the International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education, International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, and Education Sciences. Notable works include "Teaching undergraduate mathematics fully online: a review from the perspective of communities of practice" (2020), "Media effects accompanying the use of recorded lecture videos in undergraduate mathematics instruction" (2021), "Challenges and suggestions regarding the aesthetic experience of mathematics when teaching and learning fully online" (2023), "Forum posts, communication patterns, and relational structures: A multi-level view of discussions in online courses" (2023), and "When Video Improves Learning in Higher Education" (2024). Trenholm has led funded research initiatives, such as "Designing for Learning Together: Linking Course Design, Social Context and Academic Performance" through the University Research Investment – Performance Allocation (URIPA), "Health literacy, health numeracy and health information usage of parents: Towards healthier child futures" via the Research Themes Investment Scheme Seed Funding (RTIS), and "University Learner Engagement with Mathematics e-Lectures: Performance Benefits and Learning Experiences" under the Division Research Performance Fund (DRPF).
