Dr. Toan Pham is a lecturer in TESOL and applied linguistics in the School of Education, College of Education, Behavioural and Social Sciences, at Adelaide University. He possesses extensive teaching and research experience across Australian and international contexts. Pham earned his PhD in 2013 from the University of South Australia, with a focus on the Interlanguage Pragmatic Development of Vietnamese Learners of English as an Additional Language. Prior to his current appointment, he joined the University of South Australia in 2015, serving in roles such as tutor, lecturer, and coordinator in Applied Linguistics within UniSA Justice & Society and TESOL in UniSA Education Futures. In these positions, he delivered both on-campus and online core courses for undergraduate and master's degree programs. Before relocating to Australia, Pham worked as a tertiary TESOL lecturer in Vietnam, where his responsibilities were closely aligned with school-based teaching and learning practices.
Pham's primary research specializations encompass TESOL, with a particular emphasis on English Medium Instruction (EMI), Interlanguage Pragmatic Development, and Language and Culture in Education. He has engaged in collaborative projects exploring EMI and higher education dynamics. Key initiatives include co-leading the 2023-2024 project 'Dialogic practice with multilingual learners of English,' funded by the University of South Australia and Adelaide Secondary School of English with AUD 15,000, which enhanced teachers' research skills through action research and produced a manual alongside teaching resources to foster oral language learning. Another significant effort was the 2021-2022 'Developing intercultural competence in pre-service teachers' program, supported by AUD 48,500 from the Australian Government's New Colombo Plan Mobility Program, facilitating a study tour for 15 students to Vietnam to deepen insights into its education system and regional ties. His notable publications feature 'English as an international language in Viet Nam: history and development' co-authored with Doan, Pham, and Tran (2018, Asian Englishes, 20(2), 106-121) and the chapter 'Student experiences of institutional and practitioner decision-making in Vietnamese undergraduate English-Medium programs: agency at the intersection of policy, curriculum and pedagogy' with Barnett (2022, Springer). Pham has been honored with the 2009 Vietnam Ministry of Education & Training – University of South Australia President’s Postgraduate Scholarship and the 2005 Vietnam National University President’s Award for Academic Excellence. He coordinates and teaches courses such as Learning English as an Additional Language, Curriculum and Evaluation in TESOL, Developing Languages Programs, Theories and Theorists of Learning and Development, and International Comparative Studies in Education. Pham is eligible to co-supervise Masters and PhD students.
