Professor Tobias Langlotz served as a full Professor in the Department of Information Science at the University of Otago, where he founded and co-led the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) group for nearly 12 years. He now holds an honorary Professor position at Otago while serving as Professor at Aarhus University in the Visual Computing group. Originally from Germany, Langlotz studied at Bauhaus University Weimar and earned a Dr. techn. (PhD) in Computer Science. His research specializes in human-computer interaction, augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), extended reality (XR), and visual computing, with key focuses on computational glasses and vision augmentations to compensate visual impairments or enhance perception, nomadic and wearable telepresence for sharing environments, virtual tourism via VR/AR, pervasive AR for continuous use, and coherent MR rendering challenges. Previously, his work emphasized mobile/handheld AR, spatial AR, and holographic displays.
Langlotz received the Early Career Award for Distinction in Research from the University of Otago in 2017 and was a finalist for Supervisor of the Year in 2016. His research is funded by the MBIE Endeavour programme (Science Leader), Marsden grants, National Science Challenge SfTI seed grant, Royal Society Catalyst seed grant, MBIE smart ideas grant, and partners including Snap Inc., Qualcomm, Lumus, Internet NZ, and Nokia. Notable publications include 'ChromaGlasses: Computational Glasses for Compensating Colour Blindness' (ACM CHI 2018, Honourable Mention Award), 'Neural Cameras: Learning Camera Characteristics for Coherent Mixed Reality Rendering' (IEEE ISMAR 2021, Best Conference Paper Award), 'Visual Noise Cancellation: Exploring Visual Discomfort and Opportunities for Vision Augmentations' (ACM TOCHI 2023), 'A Design Space for Vision Augmentations and Augmented Human Perception using Digital Eyewear' (ACM CHI 2024), and 'Light Attenuation Display: Subtractive See-Through Near-Eye Display via Spatial Color Filtering' (IEEE TVCG 2019, Nominated for Best Paper). He delivered the Inaugural Professorial Lecture 'The Augmented Human' at Otago in March 2024, served as General Chair for IEEE VR 2022 and 2023, acts as deputy director of the ARIVE network, and is a named inventor on AR patents commercialized by Nokia and Qualcomm. Langlotz is a member of IEEE and ACM, contributes as reviewer for top HCI/AR/VR venues, and has mentored PhD and postdoc students achieving international publications and awards.
