Uday Kompella, PhD, FARVO, FAAPS, is a Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Ophthalmology, and Bioengineering at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. He earned his PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Southern California, MPharm in Pharmaceutical Engineering from Jadavpur University in Kolkata, India, and BPharm (Hons) from BITS Pilani, India. His academic career began as Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacal Sciences at Auburn University from 1994 to 1998. He then joined the University of Nebraska Medical Center, advancing from Assistant Professor to tenured Associate Professor in Pharmaceutical Sciences, with courtesy appointments in Ophthalmology, and serving as Chair of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Graduate Program until 2008. Since 2008, he has held his professorship at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, with courtesy appointments in Ophthalmology and Bioengineering. Kompella is Co-founder and Co-Director of the Colorado Center for Nanomedicine and Nanosafety and co-founded Ocugen, Inc., a public biotechnology company.
His research focuses on nanomedicines, specializing in nanotechnology for drug and gene delivery via ocular, nasal, and pulmonary routes, employing supercritical fluid technology to formulate polymeric nanoparticles, nanoporous particles, microparticles, and soluble complexes. These efforts target conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, corneal angiogenesis, neonatal encephalopathy, epilepsy, and cancers. Key publications include the books 'Nanoparticle Technology for Drug Delivery' co-authored with Gupta (Routledge), 'Drug Product Development for the Back of the Eye' (Springer), and 'Supercritical Fluid Technology for Drug Product Development' co-authored with York and Shekunov (Routledge). Kompella has received the Distinguished Scientist Award and Distinguished Teacher Award from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Dean’s Mentoring Award and Innovations in Science Award from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, Undergraduate Alumni Teaching Excellence Award from Auburn University, and ARVO Foundation for Eye Research/Pfizer Ophthalmics/Carl Camras Translational Research Award in Ophthalmology. He is Editor-in-Chief of Expert Opinion on Drug Delivery since 2011 and has served in editorial roles for Pharmaceutical Research, Journal of Ocular Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and others. His work is cited over 16,000 times on Google Scholar, demonstrating substantial impact in ocular and respiratory drug delivery.
