Wendy M. Guyker, PhD, is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Counseling, School, and Educational Psychology at the University at Buffalo Graduate School of Education. She earned her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University at Buffalo in 2010 and her B.S. in Human Development from Cornell University in 2002. As Program Director for the Combined Counseling Psychology/School Psychology Doctoral Program, she oversees doctoral training and teaches courses in research methods, assessment, and principles and practice of counseling. Guyker has advanced through the clinical faculty ranks at UB, achieving promotion to clinical full professor, underscoring her dedication to education and mentorship in counseling psychology.
Guyker's research specializations encompass meditation, mental health and wellness, self-regulation, wellness, and yoga, emphasizing positive embodiment and mindful practices. She co-developed the Mindful Self-Care Scale (MSCS) with Catherine P. Cook-Cottone, a tool validated across cultures and professions, including the MSCS Version 2.0 and Brief-MSCS. Notable publications include "Development and Interethnic Validation of the Mindful Self-Care Scale, Version 2.0—Eight Mindful Self-Care Factors and Their Relationship to Present Moment-Centeredness" (Cook-Cottone et al., 2025, Mindfulness); "Efficacy of the Eat Breathe Thrive Recovery Protocol Delivered Virtually to Adults Recovering From Eating Disorders: A Randomized Controlled Trial" (Cook-Cottone et al., 2025, International Journal of Eating Disorders); "Effects of a Yoga-Based Program on Well-Being and Traumatic Stress: A Noncontrolled Trial in Rwanda, Africa" (Cook-Cottone et al., 2025, International Journal of Yoga Therapy); and "A controlled trial assessing the acceptability and efficacy of a yoga-based eating disorder prevention program among division I athletes: Eat Breathe Thrive (EBT)" (Cook-Cottone et al., 2024, Eating Disorders). These studies highlight the effectiveness of the Eat Breathe Thrive program in preventing and treating eating disorders across diverse groups. Her contributions have shaped counseling practices by integrating yoga and mindfulness, and as a registered yoga teacher, she applies this expertise through projects like the Mindful Wellness Assessment.
