Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, a U.S. Navy SEAL from Patchogue, New York, developed a similar routine he called Body Armor while deployed. He performed the sequence wearing his standard-issue body armor vest during training. Murphy lost his life on June 28, 2005, during Operation Red Wings in Afghanistan. His actions that day earned him the Medal of Honor. CrossFit founder Greg Glassman posted the workout on the site in August 2005, and it quickly became known as Murph in his memory.
Dr. Joshua Appel, an Air Force pararescueman who helped recover Murphy’s team, began organizing the workout at his local CrossFit gym on Memorial Day two years later. What started as a small group tribute grew when Appel reached out to Murphy’s father, Dan Murphy, and launched an online fundraiser. Proceeds support the Lt. Michael P.
