26-02 Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Biology

The Department of Biology, part of the College of Sciences and Mathematics, is dedicated to fostering a learning environment where teaching, scholarship, and service are integral to our mission. The faculty position involves teaching undergraduate and graduate Biology courses, often with laboratory components, as well as one-on-one academic advising. Faculty at WCU serve as instructors and researchers. Candidates are expected to conduct research and provide meaningful research opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students participation. The candidate's experience and skills will be leveraged towards training the next generation of scientists and serving our diverse biology student population. Collaborations are encouraged, and the ideal candidate will value building connections and fostering a sense of belonging for our students. The faculty member will collaborate with other departmental faculty and staff to ensure student success.
Responsibilities include:
- Teach lecture and laboratory courses in the Biology program in one or more of the following areas: General Biology, Microbiology, Cell Biology, and/or Human Anatomy and Physiology, depending on the candidate's area of expertise
- Develop an undergraduate course for Biology majors that support a selection of WCU's General Education Goals. These goals include areas such as effective communication, critical and analytical thinking, responding thoughtfully to diversity, and making informed decisions and ethical choices
- Teach graduate and/or undergraduate course(s) in the candidate's area of expertise
- Develop an active, funded research program that can engage undergraduate and graduate (M.S.) students. Research expectations include publishing research in peer-reviewed journals, applying for internal and external funding, and presenting research generated at WCU at regional and national conferences, while encouraging student research participation and presentations
- Academic advising of Biology students
- Serve the University and the community through participation in various committees
- Performs other duties as assigned
Doctorate in Biology or a closely related field. ABD may be considered - must be completed before August 2026
Demonstrated ability to teach courses in the Biology curriculum - including General Biology, Microbiology, Cell Biology, and/or Human Anatomy & Physiology
Demonstrated ability to establish an active, student-centered research program
Experience mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students, including those from historically marginalized backgrounds; and/or
Experience teaching at the college level, including serving as lead instructor, guest lecturer, and/or teaching assistant
