4 Research Grants Announcement (M/F)
Call open for applications for a research grant within the framework of project UID/04427/2025 of the CITTA Research Center for Territory, Transports and Environment, With DOI : https://doi.org/10.54499/UID/04427/2025, funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P./MECI through the national funds, under the following conditions:
Scientific Area: Spatial Planning and Transport Systems
Admission requirements: Candidates who cumulatively meet the following two requirements may apply for this grant:
Requirement 1:
- Be a student enrolled in a doctoral program in the area of Spatial Planning or Transport Systems, a requirement to be duly proven at the time of signing the contract.
or
- Holder of an academic degree enrolled in a non-academic degree course integrated in the educational project of a higher education institution, developed in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units, a requirement to be duly proven at the time of signing the contract.
Note: In the case of masters who are enrolled in non-academic degree courses, the scholarship can only be awarded to those who do not exceed, with this scholarship contract, including possible renewals, an accumulated period of two years in that typology of the scholarship, followed or interpolated.

Requirement 2:
- Hold a master’s degree in Spatial Planning, Transports, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Geography or related field.
If the degree has been awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of the Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of august 16th, and any formalities established there must be fulfilled until the time of signing the contract.
Activity Outline:
The scholarship holder will take part in the scientific and training activities carried out under CITTA’s Activity Plan, which is guided by the theme ‘Promoting Sustainable Urban Transitions’, and will be responsible for carrying out the following tasks:
- reviewing the state of the art on research topics covered by the Activity Plan;
- defining and developing research methodologies;
- collecting, processing, analysing, interpreting and discussing data and results;
- presenting results at national and international scientific conferences;
- preparing and submitting scientific articles for publication in international peer-reviewed journals;
- preparing and writing a doctoral thesis in the scientific field of Spatial Planning or Transport Systems.
Legislation and regulations: Law Nº. 40/2004, of 18th August, in its current wording (Statutes of Scientific Research Fellow) and Regulation of Research Grants of Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, in force and Regulation of Research Grants of University of Porto, in force.
Work place: The work will be developed at the Department of Department of Civil and Georesources Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), under the scientific supervision of Professor Cecília do Carmo Ferreira da Silva.
Grant duration: Initial duration of 12 months, with the predicted starting date in October 2026, on an exclusive basis eventually renewable but never exceeding the project duration.
If it is not possible to ensure the duration of 12 months estimated in the previous paragraph, this duration will be adjusted according to the end date of the project, and provided that the minimum duration of 3 consecutive months is guaranteed, in accordance with paragraph 3 of article 6 of the Research Grant Regulations of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P.
The eventual renewal of the scholarship will be carried out as determined in article 6 of the Research Grants Regulation of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P.
Stipend: The grant stipend amounts to 1.359,64 € according to the table of values of the grants awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in the Country .
The payment will be made by bank transfer.
Selection procedure:
The curriculum of the candidates (60%) will be evaluated based on the merit of the candidate and the following factors will be weighted:
- Academic qualifications, taking into account the final grade for the Master’s degree as stated on the academic degree certificates and the relevance of the academic background to the subject area of spatial planning and/or transport systems:
- Final mark: final mark of 16 or above – 5 points; final mark of 14 or 15 – 3 points; final mark below 14 – 1 point.
- Note: Applicants with foreign qualifications who do not provide evidence of the conversion of their final mark to the Portuguese grading scale will be awarded a minimum of 1 point under sub-criterion 1.1.
- Alignment of the academic background with the subject area of spatial planning and/or transport systems: strong alignment – up to 4 points; moderate alignment – up to 2 points; weak alignment – up to 1 point.
- Professional and research experience, taking into account participation in projects and/or scientific publications and professional activity in the field of spatial planning and transport: participation in research projects and/or relevant publications or technical work in the fields of Spatial Planning and Transport Systems – up to 5 points; in related fields – up to 3 points; outside the project’s field – up to 1 point.
- Relevance and scientific quality of the proposed work plan – up to 6 points.
The curriculum of each candidate will be evaluated in a 1-20 points scale. Candidates with less than 13 points in the curricular evaluation will not be invited for the interview.
In the interview (40%) topics related with the work plan, experience and the candidate’s CV, will be discussed with the invited candidates, as well as his/her personal motivation and skills relevant to the participation in the project.
If none of the candidates achieves a minimum final score of 14 points, the scholarship will not be awarded.

The call is open from 04/08/2026 to 08/09/2026 (until 23h59m, GMT time).
Applications must be formalized by email to citta@fe.up.pt and to recursoshumanos@fe.up.pt, clearly stating the reference FEUP- UID/04427/2025, and including the following pdf documents:
- Motivation letter,
- Copy of certificates evidencing academic degree (referring the classification of each separated or integrated degree),
- detailed Curriculum Vitae;
- A proposed work plan, not exceeding 5 pages in length, setting out and justifying the research questions and objectives, by reference to the state of the art, and including a preliminary outline of the methodology and a timetable for the activities to be carried out.
- Declaration on honor that the candidate fulfills the requirement contained in article 6 of the Regulation for Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. (model below, for student enrolled in a non-academic degree course integrated in the educational project of a higher education institution, developed in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units) and other documents considered relevant by the applicant.
