A PhD Student in Neuro-AI or Developmental Vision (M/F/X)
Job Summary
The project focuses on understanding how visual processing develops in brains and machines, specifically investigating rapid learning in the mammalian visual system through inductive biases. It involves measuring developmental stages in human infants, documenting inductive biases, and creating a mechanistic neural network model of the visual system that mimics its processing and adaptability.
Responsibilities
Work on the Curriculum of Sight project, develop detailed and large-scale neural models of the early visual system, collaborate with researchers from the Machine Learning group at CWI and the Brain & Cognition group at UvA, acquire infant data, and quantify and model learning efficiency in the human visual system.
Qualifications and Requirements
Candidates must have a solid computational background, an interest in cognitive neuroscience, and strong deep learning programming skills. They should be able to work in an international, interdisciplinary team. Preferable qualifications include proven research talent, excellent English command, good academic writing and presentation skills, and a Master’s degree in a relevant field such as AI, mathematics, physics, or computational neuroscience.
What the Employer Offers
The position is for a 4-year term, starting with an initial 18-month contract extendable by 30 months. The gross monthly salary ranges from €2,968 in the first year to €3,801 over the period, with additional benefits including a holiday allowance of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.33%. Employment terms follow the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres, offering flexible scheduling and assistance with housing for expat employees.
