Who are we looking for?
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to join School of Electrical Engineering and Robotics, Faculty of Engineering.
We are looking for a creative and enthusiastic Postdoctoral Fellow to contribute positively with novel Machine Learning to our Biomedical Robotics research program. You should be excited to do pioneering research in Machine Learning for Robotic Scene Understanding in deformable domains. You are driven to investigate how autonomous agents can understand and represent the geometry, semantics, and functionality of their surroundings and the task-relevant objects therein; especially in dynamic and uncertain domains such as the human body. This will enable robots that can use this internal representation and learn to decide or plan their next actions to accomplish a useful task in a safe way.
About us
QUT is a major Australian university with a global outlook and a 'real world' focus. We are an ambitious and collaborative institution that seeks to equip our students and graduates with the skills they will need in an increasingly disrupted and challenged world.
The School of Electrical Engineering and Robotics plays a significant role in almost every aspect of a modern lifestyle, supplying the energy and intelligence for the technology that helps us to manage and understand the world around us. We work to ensure safe, affordable and environmentally responsible supply and consumption of electricity. We make sense of the world’s data streaming in from cameras, devices, and sensors. Our expertise in Robotics, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Wireless Communications and Signal Processing allows us to develop systems to automatically interpret the world, its people and their activities from diverse visual and audio sources. We create cutting edge robotic systems that interact with the real world, operating autonomously in our natural and built environments to benefit industries such as health, transport, manufacturing, mining and agriculture. We are committed to the education of Electrical Engineers both as undergraduates and postgraduates, and work with partner Schools to deliver leading edge Mechatronic, Software and Aerospace Engineering education.
What you need to succeed
- Completion of a PhD in a relevant discipline preferably in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision or Machine Learning.
- Demonstrated expertise and understanding of the foundations of machine learning, such as Deep neural architectures, Transformers, Vision-Language Models/Actions, Decision-Making, and Informed Learning.
- You understand the mathematical and statistical foundations of deep learning. You are driven and excited to constantly learn to understand new techniques and keep up with a quickly evolving field.
- Substantial proficiency with using Python and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, and regularly work and develop in Linux. Ideally, you have a working knowledge of Git.
- A demonstrated track record of publishing in the leading conferences and/or journals in robotics, computer vision, or machine learning.
- Demonstrated written communication skills, including the ability to maintain accurate records, and experience in summarising scientific data in reports.
- Demonstrated experience in all aspects of the research process, including ethical standards in research confidentiality and an ability to protect intellectual property.
