Academic Advisor Generalist
Position Summary
This position is supported by a two-year Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) Student Success Acceleration Grant ending 8/31/2026.
The Advising, Counseling & Support Services Department is recruiting for a part-time Academic Advisor Generalist to begin September 1, 2025. This position is responsible for participating in the planning and delivery of academic advising and support services that promote comprehensive educational opportunities for all students. Responsible for understanding and interpreting the requirements and academic options available to students. Develops and maintains working relationships with other areas of the college.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Provides academic and career advising for new and continuing students, including those in transfer and technical degree and certificate programs. Maintains and ensures confidentiality of student documents and records.
- Assists students with the admissions process, to include completion of applications (admissions, financial aid, scholarship, etc.), and assessment requirements.
- Responsible for providing current and potential students with assessment of their career interests and aptitudes, based on assessment data.
- Provides career advising and guidance activities.
- Collaborates as a team member on the delivery of student recruitment and retention activities.
- Assists with student onboarding activities, department events, college tours for prospective students, College Connection programs, and other student related events.
- Participates in professional development opportunities.
- Performs other duties as assigned by Director of Advising, Counseling, & Support Services.
Qualifications
- Requires Bachelors degree in education, psychology, sociology, communications, or related field.
- Requires minimum of 2 years of strong customer service experience.
- Must support and have a clear understanding of the mission of community college.
- Experience working an educational environment and working with a diverse population is preferred.
- Must have excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
- Experience with software, including MS Office, Internet, Banner, and email.
- Ability to accomplish business tasks, meet deadlines, and ability to learn and interpret policies and procedures.
- Sensitivity to diverse populations and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Knowledge of Carl D Perkins Vocational-Technical Educational Act, ADA, Veterans Affairs, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Teacher Aid Exemption Program
- Bilingual preferred
