Assistant Director of Academic Advising
The Assistant Director of Academic and Career Advising, reporting to the Director of Upper Division Advising, plays an important role in the work of the College of Arts and Sciences and Maxwell advising team. The Assistant Director provides transformational and strategic leadership and supervision of a team of integrated academic and career advisors. This position also works collaboratively to create a welcoming and supportive environment for students, carry out the vision for the department, and work synergistically with the Division of Student Success, faculty and academic leaders of the University's educational programs, and the University in its entirety.
In conjunction with best practices, the Assistant Director will design, develop, update, and deliver workshops for undergraduate students on topics related to major and/or minor selection, program requirements, career development, job search strategies, and graduate school planning. The Assistant Director will oversee academic and career programming run directly through the office including but not limited to immersion trips, resume initiatives, and mock interview initiatives.
Education and Experience:
- Master's degree and experience in a high-level support or a management role in higher education desired.
- 2+ years of experience in academic advising preferred.
- Experience in assessment, planning, program reviews, self-studies, academic advising, working with individuals under time and multitasking pressures.
Responsibilities:
- In conjunction with best practices, design, develop, update, and deliver a variety of workshops for undergraduate students on topics such as major and/or minor selection, program requirements, career development, job search strategies, and graduate school planning.
- Support planning of special events that facilitate group advising, including collaborative events across campus that pertain to Arts and Sciences/Maxwell students.
- Under the direction of the CAS/Maxwell Director of Academic Advising, the Assistant Director will supervise an academic advising team and provide performance feedback in a timely manner.
- Provide direction for campus academic advising policies and procedures, in collaboration with the colleges and schools, the registrar, and enrollment management.
- Serve as an information resource for advisors, students, faculty, staff and parents in matters related to advising.
- Responsible for training and coordination of delivery of advising programming within assigned advising team.
- Provides expertise, support, and direction to advisors within assigned advising team.
- Provide academic and professional (career and graduate pathway) advising through one-on-one and group sessions for assigned cohort of undergraduate students.
- This position will be responsible for advising the dual and double majors assigned to your team.
- Ensure requirements are met for all undergraduate students for on-time graduation.
- Support assigned advising team in degree audits, establish regular communications with advisees, and maintain up-to-date and accurate student records utilizing University's prescribed software.
- Manage escalated student cases that arise from your direct report advisors.
- Collaborate and maintain relationships with faculty and staff in schools and colleges within SU to help identify and guide students towards successful college and post college paths.
- Partner with Alumni and/or Employer relations (Central) to assist in helping to achieve education and career goals.
- Serve as main point of contact with students and guide them through various program options in the University.
- Attend and participate in division, department and university-wide meetings and represent Office of Student Success as needed.
- Identify, track, and report metrics on all career-related outcomes such as student appointments, career education engagement, internships, and placement into career and graduate school.
- Administer and interpret career-related assessments.
- Collect these data points utilizing the university-wide shared career technology software. Report metrics to College and University leadership as requested.
- Evaluate progress and assess programming and delivery for continuous improvement of student success.
