Job Details

The College of Health and Human Sciences at Southern Illinois University is seeking an Academic Advisor I. This is a full-time, term administrative/professional position. The position is available on January 16, 2026. Review of applications will begin on January 5, 2026, and will continue until the position is filled or an adequate applicant pool is established.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.

Examples of Duties

1. Promote an inclusive environment in which all people are valued, supported, and respected.
2. Establish a unique relationship with each student that focuses on interests, abilities, and values that facilitate career decision-making during the academic advisement process.
3. Assist students in developing an educational plan that relates to their choice of degree program
4. Assist students in gaining a basic understanding of the College’s admission requirements, registration process, and processes that need to be completed by the student (e.g. math placement testing, applying for graduation)
5. Assist students in interpreting and understanding placement scores, program curricula and pre-requisites.
6. Have a working knowledge of the degree requirements and pre-requisites needed for the degree programs assigned
7. Have a working knowledge of the University Core Curriculum requirements and how it is tailored to the degree programs assigned.
8. Teach student how to use the Banner Self-Registration (SSB) to build and manage a class schedule
9. Teach students how to use Degree Works as a degree audit tool in order to track progress toward a degree.
10. Effectively utilize all platforms including, but not limited to, calendaring, electronic advising notations, reports, and other systems as required.
11. Teach students how to use Degree Works to perform “what-if” scenarios in order to explore other degree options.
12. Utilize student information systems to view and interpret/evaluate student records, examination scores, and transcripts to facilitate academic advisement and course registration, to track progress towards degree, and to process graduation clearances.
13. Make referrals to appropriate campus offices and/or support programs in response to the academic and/or personal needs of students.
14. Maintain academic advising communications and records in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
15. Maintain compliance with all mandatory training program requirements.
16. Participate in retention and recruitment initiatives as assigned.
17. Participate in on- and off-campus orientation, advisement, and open house functions as assigned.
18. Participate in professional development programs, advisement meetings, technology and professional development workshops as assigned.
19. Coordination of receiving and distributing syllabi for articulation consideration.
20. Perform other tasks as needed and/or assigned to enhance services of Academic Advisement and support the institutional mission.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Bachelor's degree by date of hire
2. Strong written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Master's Degree
2. Experience within a postsecondary environment; such as academic advising, mentoring, or counseling undergraduate students or closely related experiences.
