Primary Responsibility

Under the supervision of the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, the Academic Advisor II and Access Coordinator position encompasses a combination of student services that includes academic advising, disability services functions, and other elements of student support and advocacy. The array of duties will revolve with the rhythm of the academic year.

As Academic Advisor II, the incumbent, utilizing exceptional interpersonal skills and in-depth knowledge of the college catalog, provides student advising and coordinates various tasks in support of the following campus student services. Provides administrative counseling and guidance in interpreting the College’s academic policies and guidelines. Delivers academic, career and transfer advising, and registration and financial aid assistance, and general guidance for students. Guides students with problem-solving and goal identification; analyzes situations and determines required actions. Leads retention and recruitment activities and student organizations. Keeps detailed and accurate records related to student tracking and reporting. Communicates professionally and confidentially with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff and community partners. Works as a cooperating and contributing member of the campus team, responding to evolving demographic, technological and community needs, and providing leadership and support in the development of new and enhanced student success programs. Promotes the vision and mission of Colorado Mountain College.

As Access Coordinator, the incumbent develops, maintains, and disseminates guidelines, policies and procedures as per The American with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) standards for faculty, staff and students. Coordinates assistive/adaptive/alternative technology and other services to meet the accommodation needs of students with disabilities.

Pre-requisites for Position (Qualifications Standards)

Education and experience sufficient to meet the rigors of the position. Examples include a Master’s Degree and two years of related work experience, a Bachelor’s Degree and four years of related work experience, or equivalent education and experience that will provide the necessary knowledge, skill and abilities to perform the functions of the position.

Experience working with students with disabilities at the post-secondary level preferred.

Special Skills or abilities related to position: Knowledge of higher education degree requirements, and current practices and technology utilized in student services. Ability to provide thoughtful academic, transfer and career advising; interpret and analyze placement data and aptitude assessments. Evaluate documentation of disabilities and determine appropriate accommodations. Effectively speak in public and develop and conduct training and workshops. Exhibit exceptional verbal, written, analytical, and interpersonal skills. Maintain confidentiality, discretion and professionalism. Organize and prioritize work while exercising flexibility, teamwork and humor.

Knowledge of Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act; local, regional and state, federal disabilities support services programs and agencies. Ability to provide academic and career/life counseling/advising; evaluate documentation of disabilities and determine appropriate accommodations.

Hiring range = $67,723.45 - $75,248.29 annual salary depending upon a combination of education and experience. Benefits include Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, Pet insurance, retirement contribution, tuition reimbursement, annual & sick time, mental health resources, healthy lifestyle benefits, affordable transitional housing may be available to the successful candidate based on eligibility and availability, relocation if applicable. CMC utilizes a wage progression compensation model that accounts for a candidate’s skill and experience. Although a salary range is listed, salary will be set commensurate with the successful candidate’s qualifications and in compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act.

Minimum Qualifications:

Essential Duties

Academic Advisor II

Student advising:

  • Advises students, providing high quality guidance, mentoring, and tools for success in college.
  • Interprets placement assessments, through the course of students’ college journey, co-creates, with students, comprehensive academic plans based upon understanding of program requirements, students’ aptitudes and propensities, selects courses, and explores transfer institution and career pathways.
  • Explains options and next steps for students on academic suspension and probation.
  • Monitors student progress and maintains appropriate records to best assist individual students, as well to providing analytics to guide retention and completion initiatives.

Campus collaboration and coordination:

  • Maintains close connections with faculty and academic affairs staff to generate and develop student success and retention initiatives.
  • Collaborates with registration, financial aid and marketing staff.
  • Helps coordinates campus events such as orientation, success seminars, and campus visits.
  • Assists in planning and working graduation.
  • Provides guidance for student clubs and organizations.
  • Serves on campus committees.
  • Supervises support staff and work-study students.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Outreach and communication:

  • Generates creative means to develop and present student seminars and workshops.
  • Connects with TRIO, veteran, ESL, and high school equivalency (HSE) students.
  • Updates campus online student services content and adapts to evolving communication modalities, including, but not limited to social media.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with relevant community entities.
  • Facilitates student referrals to mental health services.
  • Communicates with transfer institutions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Access Coordinator

  • Student support: Plans, directs, and implements campus disabilities support services and coordinates accommodation for qualifying students; maintains student records per college, state, and federal guidelines; coordinates assistive, adaptive and/or alternative technology for students with disabilities; collects, interprets, and evaluates documentation of student disabilities; serves as student advocate.
  • Communication and education: Provides training and workshops; collaborates with academic and student affairs to create awareness of services available to students with disabilities; facilitates ADA Compliance Standards regarding accommodations on assigned campuses; consults with physical plant staff regarding ADA/Section 504 Compliance Standards for campus/physical facility needs; recommends college-wide policies in collaboration with others; acts as liaison between Disabilities Services and students, parents, faculty, staff and community agencies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervision of the Position

This position receives general direction from a senior level administrator.

Supervision by Position

This position provides guidance and advisement to students, and may supervise lower-level professional/technical and/or clerical/technical employees, and work-study students.

Special Conditions of Employment

Successful completion of a background check including motor vehicles records report will be required. Incumbents in this position will adhere to all safety and compliance policies of Colorado Mountain College while performing all duties assigned. An altered schedule may be necessary at times. Evening and weekend work and traveling to CMC service areas may be required at times.

Serve in the professional staff on-call rotation throughout the year to respond to emergencies and policy violations in the residence hall. Professional staff on-call must be available to take calls and come to campus quickly for the entirety of their on-call duration.

Working Conditions

This position requires constant sitting, occasional walking, standing and driving; occasional handling objects, pushing/pulling; frequent reaching with hands/arms, and use of finger movements; occasional lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling objects up to 50 lbs. Constant written and oral communication and the ability to reason and analyze and perform calculations occasionally. Work is performed using a computer and standard office equipment daily and driving a vehicle occasionally.
