Job Description Summary

The Academic & Career Pathways Advisor is responsible for providing holistic case management, advising and providing related services to TRiO Student Support Services’ 275 student participants. This position will work closely with participants in clarifying life/career goals, academic and transfer advising, establishing educational goals, enhancing financial literacy skills, and the development of individualized educational plans. Responsibilities include the use of individual/group sessions, review of available academic and assessment data, evaluations to determine program effectiveness and academic advising. Plan and supervise cultural events, campus tours, and other activities as outlined in the federal grant guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, higher education administration, or related field.
  • Three years’ experience providing academic advising, counseling, student support services or related experience in an education or student-focused environment.
  • Experience providing direct service to a diverse population including disadvantaged students and/or students with disabilities
  • Master’s degree in education, student personnel, or related field preferred.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Shares the knowledge of the college catalog, curricula, and academic programs
  • Provides career, job and transfer articulation information to a grant population of students
  • Maintains an active liaison relationship with academic departments and divisions on campus.
  • Interprets and accurately communicates college policies and procedures for students, faculty and staff
  • Provides advising for TRIO SSS students in a variety of formats and locations including late registration, individual advising sessions, classroom visits and group sessions
  • Troubleshoots and resolves issues to facilitate student registration and documents findings and resolutions in OwlLink, Colleague, Navigate, etc.
  • Refers students to appropriate on and off campus resources to meet individual academic and non-academic needs.
  • Partners with faculty and staff to provide in class intervention, in class presentations, implement annual programs and training for students
  • Analyzes and evaluates academic records and transcripts from other institutions to assist in course placement and make referral for transfer credit evaluation, prior knowledge learning, career assessment, resume writing, internships
  • Researches current academic information about other institutions’ certificate, degree, and transfer programs
  • Interprets academic assessment results and/or identifies the proper prerequisites and course sequences for the student
  • Assists students in resolving problems that impede a smooth registration process
  • Remains current on use of Colleague, Navigate, Owl Link, the email system, and other technologies or software required to guide students through all aspects of advising.
  • Incorporates industry standards and best practices for advising to meet students’ needs.
  • Seeks opportunities to grow professionally by attending workshops, conferences, meetings and forums, reading literature, research publications and other professional development opportunities to advance expertise while advising and to enhance student experience.
  • Develops collaborative, effective working relationships and programs with college personnel who are critical to student success.
  • Learns the guidelines for partnerships, agreements, and programs that impact transfer and career planning
  • Assesses all programs, services and initiatives to ensure the learning outcomes and program outcomes are met.
  • Communicates and updates students throughout the academic year including the benchmarks of 15, 30, 45 and 60 credit hours. Supports the completion of the developmental sequence once the student begins it.
  • Creates, discusses and implements strategies to improve student success
  • Respond to and manage cases assigned through the retention alerts or other referrals
  • Complete Satisfactory Academic Progress ( SAP ) appeal process
  • Performs related work as required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of higher education institution policies and procedures
  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written standard English
  • Ability to provide appropriate and timely advisement related to credit programs
  • Ability to conduct workshops, presentations, information sessions and planning sessions
  • Proficient use of information technology to support departmental activities
  • Ability to translate college policy and procedures in alternate formats for student use
  • Experience supporting/administering federal, state, or local college access/retention programs for underrepresented student groups (e.g., GEAR UP, TRiO programs, etc.)
  • Knowledge on administering career/educational planning assessments or inventories
  • Knowledge in providing information to students interested in transferring to 4-year colleges
  • Knowledge of developing strategies/interventions for supporting underrepresented students
  • Ability and willingness to learn and maintain databases for different computer applications/programs
  • Strong attention to detail, case management skills, and accurate record-keeping to ensure program compliance and success.
  • Knowledge in making small group presentations
  • Ability to train and coordinate efforts with faculty and staff for programming and planning activities or services

Job Requirements

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. No significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Continuation of this position is contingent on annual renewal of funding from the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Work schedule varies depending on activities/events.
  • Ability to work occasional weekends and evenings, including operating a commercial vehicle when transporting program participants to different events/activities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written standard English.
  • As required by the 1986 Immigration Act, be prepared to present acceptable documentation showing your identity and that you are a U.S. citizen or an alien who is authorized to work.
  • A background investigation will be conducted prior to the offer of employment. A signed authorization for the release of personal information will be required if selected for an interview.
