Essential Job Duties:
The Accounting Technician applies accounting principles and practices to support a broad range of fiscal and payroll functions, including financial analysis, reconciliation, and compliance monitoring. This role is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial operations by compiling and analyzing data, auditing transactions, and supporting budget oversight across multiple fund types, including state, trust, grant, and gift funds.
Working with enterprise financial and reporting systems, the position plays a key role in maintaining compliant, well-documented financial processes and supporting division-wide financial management activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Process, review, and reconcile financial transactions, including journal vouchers, budget journals, interdepartmental transactions, salary redistributions, and cash management activities to ensure accuracy and compliance with university guidelines.
- Audit payroll and financial transactions, including student payroll, to verify appropriate charging of salaries and benefits and ensure alignment with approved budgets.
- Monitor, reconcile, and analyze division budgets, providing variance reporting, projections, and support for budget planning and review processes.
- Manage Approved Rates and Charges, including maintaining supporting data, performing financial analysis, and ensuring compliance with applicable guidelines.
- Review and reconcile division deposits, ensuring accurate classification of funds and adherence to university policies.
- Oversee cash and check handling processes, ensuring compliance with internal controls and audit standards.
- Compile and analyze financial data through standard and ad hoc reporting using enterprise systems and reporting tools.
- Manage finance-related communications and documentation, ensuring timely responses and accurate recordkeeping.
- Serve as a resource for interpreting financial policies and procedures, including supporting walk-in inquiries and directing stakeholders as appropriate.
- Participate in or lead special projects focused on improving financial processes, systems, and internal controls in collaboration with division and university partners.
- Provide backup administrative and financial support to the Finance team as needed.
Success in this role requires strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment. The position works both independently and collaboratively, communicates financial information clearly, and contributes to efficient, compliant, and well-supported financial operations.

Minimum Experience/Education:
High School Diploma or equivalency and one year of experience in accounting work; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Required Qualifications:
Knowledge and application of generally accepted accounting principles. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Advanced working knowledge of frequently used applications: enterprise system (PeopleSoft), financial reporting systems, HR/payroll systems, spreadsheet applications, and google applications. Keen attention to detail and accuracy, highly organized, customer service focused. Should be an independent worker with ability to prioritize workload to meet strict deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated knowledge and application of generally accepted accounting principles, including experience reconciling financial transactions and monitoring compliance.
- Experience using enterprise financial, HR/payroll, and reporting systems (e.g., PeopleSoft, financial reporting tools) and advanced proficiency in spreadsheet applications (e.g., Microsoft Excel).
- Experience managing or analyzing budgets, including payroll budgets, revenue tracking, variance analysis, and financial reporting.
- Experience processing or reviewing financial transactions such as journal vouchers, deposits, cash handling, or payroll functions in accordance with established guidelines.
- Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to prioritize workload, meet deadlines, and provide customer service while interpreting policies and supporting financial operations.
