Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Associate Dean and the Communication Department, the Adjunct Faculty member will be responsible for teaching lower-division communication courses across multiple modalities, including face-to-face, online, and hybrid formats. We are seeking candidates who will complement the strengths of the Communication Department and contribute meaningfully to our diverse student population. Ideal applicants will demonstrate an equity-minded approach to teaching, possess a strong theoretical foundation in communication, and have experience instructing a broad range of communication subjects.

This is a pooled position. The department reviews applications as positions become available.

This position is paid at $1,056 per instructional unit.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Teach one to three sections of lower-division communication courses in face-to-face, online, and hybrid formats across various campuses.
  • Follow the Course Curriculum Outline (CCO) and departmental curriculum standards.
  • Prepare and deliver engaging lectures and classroom activities that support student learning outcomes.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback on assignments and return graded work in accordance with department standards.
  • Conduct appropriate evaluations of student performance and maintain accurate records of attendance and grades.
  • Inform students of their progress throughout the term and submit final grades by published deadlines.
  • Provide ADA accommodations as requested and enforce FERPA guidelines.
  • Maintain professional and respectful communication with students, responding to inquiries within 1-2 days.
  • Handle student concerns and complaints appropriately, referring issues to the Department Coordinator or Associate Dean when necessary.
  • Prepare and submit incident reports for inappropriate student behavior in accordance with the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and mutually respectful instructional environment.
  • Attend required department trainings and complete all mandated employee training sessions.
  • Report absences to the Division Office and escalate concerns or complaints to appropriate leadership.
  • Maintain professional appearance and etiquette in all interactions with students, staff, faculty, and administrators.
  • Demonstrate collegial behavior and collaborate effectively with colleagues and departments across the institution.
  • Stay informed of and adhere to all college policies, with emphasis on those governing professional conduct and interdepartmental relations.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned to support departmental and institutional goals.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Graduate level knowledge of communication theory, speech communication, interpersonal communication, small group communication, organizational communication, argumentation, intercultural communication, conflict resolution and related disciplines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.

All Faculty will maintain an on-site campus presence to encourage in-person relationships and create engaging, meaningful, and impactful learning experiences unless approved for on-line only courses.

You are employed as an Adjunct Faculty member/ Instructor on a contract-to-contract basis, with no future expectation or obligation for employment. Your employment may be terminated At Will at any time.

You are required to maintain professional boundaries with all SLCC students.

Minimum qualifications

  • Master's degree in Communication or closely related field from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability teaching students in Communication subjects at the college or university level.
  • Experience teaching across multiple modalities.
  • Experience in equity-minded teaching practices, serving traditional and non-traditional students.
  • Commitment to higher education for all students including those from traditionally underrepresented populations.
