Job Summary

Under general supervision, teach various adjunct Construction Management courses which will lead students to acquire specific skills, and Associate of Science (AS) or Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degrees including:

  • Construction Material and Methods (CMGT 1010) - This course will provide students with knowledge of building techniques and materials. The course will examine common construction materials, components, and systems related to wood frame structures, utilizing sustainable building practices. The construction process will be analyzed from site planning to finish construction.
  • OSHA 30 for Construction (CMGT1130) - In-depth study of OSHA safety practices and its role in the construction industry. Review workers safety procedures and practices used in the construction industry. Attendance is required to be eligible for OSHA 30 completion card.
  • Construction Print Reading and Layout (CMGT 1450) - A study of print reading as it pertains to today's high tech industry. This course includes the study of architectural symbols and terms, relationship of views, sections, electrical and mechanical systems and diagrams. Residential and commercial plans will be examined. The use of electronic files in print reading such as PDF & DWG files will be discussed.
  • Construction Estimating (CMGT 2640) - An introduction to material take-offs, labor cost estimate, equipment cost, price extensions and competitive bidding. Various building systems will be discussed and evaluated. Formulas will be input into software such as Microsoft Excel to provide students with an experience in computerized estimating & takeoffs.
  • Construction Systems and Standards (CMGT 2820) - An introduction to energy systems for commercial and residential construction. Systems include electrical, plumbing, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, air distribution, lighting, solar and alternative energy systems and the application and effect on the building envelop and air quality. Current Green Building Standards will be studied including LEED and Energy Star.

This is a pooled position. The department reviews applications as positions become available.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  1. Effectively prepare and teach classes to facilitate student learning.
  2. Assess student performance and maintain student records.
  3. Develop, distribute, and adhere to current course outlines and/or syllabi.
  4. Demonstrate and support professional commitment to Division, School, and College mission and values.
  5. Maintain currency in the theory and practice of Construction Management and Sustainable Building.
  6. Becomes familiar with, and abides by, all college policies with immediate priority given to those policies that govern interactions with colleagues, staff, administrators, and departments throughout the organization
  7. Maintains professional etiquette in communications with students, staff, faculty, and administrators
  8. Provides appropriate and timely feedback for all assignments
  9. Returns graded assignments in a timely fashion per department standards
  10. Maintains student attendance records (for Financial Aid purposes) and grades
  11. Conducts a variety of appropriate evaluations of student performance
  12. Informs students of progress-to-date periodically and assigns and submits grades by published deadlines
  13. Assists in maintaining a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment
  14. Prepares and submits incident reports to Dean of Student Services for inappropriate student behavior as defined by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy
  15. Maintains professional and collegial behavior
  16. Handles/responds to student concerns/complaints, and responds to student communications and inquiries promptly (generally within 1-2 days)
  17. Maintains professional appearance as defined by the discipline and/or College procedure
  18. Completes all required employee trainings
  19. Knows and enforces FERPA guidelines
  20. Provides ADA accommodations as requested
  21. Other job related duties as needed
  22. Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, culture, ethnic background, and abilities, to maintain good working relationships across the College
  23. Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities

All Faculty will maintain an on-site campus presence to encourage in-person relationships and create engaging, meaningful, and impactful learning experiences unless approved for on-line only courses.

You are employed as an Adjunct Faculty member/ Instructor on a contract-to-contract basis, with no future expectation or obligation for employment. Your employment may be terminated At Will at any time.

You are required to maintain professional boundaries with all SLCC students.

Minimum qualifications

  • Must have a minimum of eight (8) full-time years of paid construction work experience, or six (6) full-time years of paid construction work experience, and
  • Associate of Applied(AAS) degree, OR four (4) full-time years of paid construction work experience and Bachelor of Science (BS) degree. Degree must be in a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. General Building Contractor's License preferred.
  2. Experience , Certifications as related to specific classes being taught
  3. Example Certifications include, but not limited to:

    • LEED
    • National Association of Home Builders Certified Green Professional
    • OSHA Certification
  4. Bachelor's degree in Construction Management or related field from an accredited College or University.
  5. Two (2) years of post-secondary teaching experience in Construction Management, Sustainable Building or a related field.
  6. Proven experience in estimating construction projects.
  7. Supervisory field management experience from start to finish on three or more custom homes or equivalent experience on commercial construction projects.
