Adjunct, Dental Hygiene
Job Summary
The key functions of adjunct clinical faculty are teaching & evaluating the clinical skills of the students in their charge. The successful candidate will teach assigned clinical courses in accordance with course competencies and syllabi and foster a safe and civil learning environment.
Salt Lake Community College seeks adjunct faculty who can adapt to a variety of teaching situations and who have the ability to work effectively with students, colleagues, staff and others in a campus climate that promotes professionalism and multicultural understanding.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities
Individuals hired in this part-time position are responsible to the Director of the Dental Hygiene Program and work directly with the Clinic Coordinators (CC) to perform the following responsibilities, which include but are not limited to:
- Hands-on instruction of clinical skills including: Use of dental practice software applications, patient management , assessment, hard & soft tissue charting, radiographic exposures (conventional & digital), prophylaxis, periodontal debridement, use of local anesthetic, home care education, local delivery of antimicrobials and fluoride & sealant application.
- Demonstrate clinical competence in all aspects of dental hygiene care.
- Utilize forms, procedures, instruments and techniques as taught in lectures and labs.
- Follow established sequence and procedures for clinical sessions.
- Collaborate with/oversee student efforts in designing and implementing the treatment plan.
- Assume responsibility for becoming and remaining calibrated in clinical teaching & modeling by learning what is taught in clinical lectures and labs.
- Monitor, evaluate & document student attendance, progress and competency attainment.
- Project a positive, helpful attitude when students request or require help.
- Maintain a positive professional working relationship with other clinical faculty.
- Preserve patient and student confidentiality.
- Maintain communication with CC with regard to clinical and educational matters.
- Provide input for appropriate change in clinical instruction, policy and/or procedures per the outcomes assessment & curriculum management plans.
- Maintain communication with CC program director with regard to clinical and educational matters.
At Will Statement means you are employed as an Adjunct Faculty member/ Instructor on a contract-to-contract or an hourly basis, with no future expectation or obligation for employment.
Professional Boundaries Statement means that you are required to maintain professional boundaries with all SLCC students.
All Faculty will maintain an on-site campus presence to encourage in-person relationships and create engaging, meaningful, and impactful learning experiences.
All SLCC employees must maintain permanent residence/address within the State of Utah to maintain employment. A permanent Utah address must be recorded to Human Resources within 30-days of your employment start date.

- Physical Requirements: varied sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting of related supplies and equipment up to 25 lbs
- May be required to perform wheelchair transfers for disabled patients.
Minimum qualifications
- Graduate of an ADA accredited dental hygiene program
- BA/BS Degree in dental hygiene or a related field from a regionally accredited college or university OR graduate of an ADA accredited dental school
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in the practice of clinical dental hygiene or dentistry; including the regular use of local anesthesia and nitrous oxide techniques
- Active state of Utah dental/dental hygiene license with local anesthesia
- Current CPR Healthcare Provider Card
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in teaching clinical dental hygiene is preferred
- Bilingual Spanish a plus
