Job Summary
The Bowdoin College Childrens Center offers a dynamic opportunity to work in a college campus center with staff who provide care to children in a professional atmosphere. The climate at the Childrens Center leads our staff toward calm, organized, and engaged work with children and each other. Our teams work collaboratively and in consort with each other meeting weekly to discuss practices and concerns as well as meeting weekly to plan curriculum for the children.
Our practices are driven by training on addressing childrens emotional needs to bring learning and growth through attachment and secure relationships. Our nature-based programs focus on generous amounts of uninterrupted outside time for children to play, explore, and experiment. All of this work is in the context of a NAEYC accredited center that is deeply and actively engaged in anti-bias and anti-racist work offered by consultants and professional development trainings throughout the year to support our growth as individuals and a staff.
The Administrative and Educator Float offers a dual opportunity from serving as the go-to person for all office support needs as well as to assisting in a educator capacity for Childrens Center infant, young toddler, older toddler, and preschool programs.
Admin responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Providing day-to-day support with scheduling staff, ordering, purchasing, storing, filing, and reporting expenses for materials/food
- Supporting the on-going seasonal work, including enrollment period, new contract management, updating files for children and staff annually, planning event space etc for professional development days
- Learning about the practice through attending team meetings, on-line course work, readings, and workshops
- Managing work orders, cleaners, facility needs, answering the door for students/consultants
- Other duties that might be assigned in support of Centers operation
Educator responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assisting in the programs (at least 20 hours/week)
- Partner with the program co-leads in support of parents to support, supervise, and assist children with toileting, toothbrushing, dressing, and eating abilities
- Preparing food and snacks, and managing the storage and ordering of food
- Supervising children and recording daily routines and notes
Compensation
- The salary for this position is $26.50 per hour and will be eligible for the supplemental income from DHHS.
- New employees will receive $1,000 sign-on bonus ($250 paid at first check, and $750 paid after 90 days of eligibility requirements are met)

Education/Skills Requirements
- Bachelors in Early Childhood Education or related field is required
- Masters in Early Childhood Education or related field preferred
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Proficiency in the DocuSign platform
- Comfortable using video conferencing platforms ie Teams and Zoom
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and a genuine commitment to the field of early childhood education
- Ability to work in a dynamic environment, adapting to changes and managing multiple priorities
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team and contribute positively to the teams operations and working environment
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
- Minimum of 4 years of relevant work experience, including administrative experience in an office setting and/or working with children (birth – 8 years)
- Prior experience working in an accredited child care program highly preferred
- CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain certification within 1 month of employment
- Please note that all employees at the Childrens Center are required to sign a Child Abuse Policy statement, complete the Colleges OSHA bloodborne pathogen training, provide proof of Hepatitis B vaccination (or submit a written declination statement)
Standard Work Days and Hours
- This is a full-time, onsite position working 40 hours/52 weeks, (1.00 FTE)
- Standard hours are Monday – Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:45 pm
