Admissions Counselor
Tennessee State University Department of Enrollment Services invites applications for the position of Admissions Counselor.
The Admissions Counselor serves as a frontline representative of Tennessee State University (TSU), engaging prospective students, families, high schools, and community partners to support the university's enrollment goals. This role manages an assigned recruitment territory and conducts extensive outreach through high school visits, college fairs, community events, and virtual programming.
The counselor provides individualized guidance on TSU's academic programs, campus life, admissions processes, scholarships, and financial aid. Responsibilities also include building relationships with school personnel, collaborating with community college partners, facilitating information sessions and tours, supporting on-campus recruitment and orientation events, reviewing applications, and maintaining accurate records in SLATE and Banner. A strong commitment to diversity, inclusion, and service to first-generation and underrepresented students is essential.
Duties and Responsibilities
Recruitment & Travel
- Represents TSU at high school visits, college fairs, and community events, including some evening and weekend travel. This role is essential for the success of the university's enrollment strategy and requires a combination of recruitment skills, customer service and strategic planning.
- Counsels prospective students and families on academic programs, campus life, admissions requirements, scholarships, and financial aid.
- Manages an assigned recruitment territory with consistent follow-up to inquiries, applicants, and admitted students via phone, email, text, and presentations.
- Build and maintain relationships with high school administrators, counselors, teachers, and staff.
- Supervises recruitment activities for the university.
Support & Collaboration
- Conducts individual and group information sessions; assist with campus tours and on-site recruitment programs.
- Engage community college students and encourage transfer enrollment.
- Provides staffing support for new student orientation as assigned by department leadership.
- Collaborates with academic departments, student services, and campus partners to support enrollment and student success initiatives.
Use of Technology
- Reviews and processes applications in accordance with TSU policies and admissions procedures.
- Utilizes SLATE (CRM) and Banner (SIS) to support data-driven recruitment practices and maintain accurate records.
