Offer Description
Scientific Advisor: Eduardo Nuno Brito Santos Júlio (ist25191)
Organic Unit: Institute for Research and Innovation in Civil Engineering for Sustainability
Scholarship Theme: Advanced numerical modelling of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures
Duration: 12 months
Maximum Duration Including Renewals: 12 months
Objectives
To develop advanced numerical models for simulating the behaviour of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures and structural elements, using the finite element method and considering the nonlinear behaviour of materials and the main interaction mechanisms between the different components. The developed models will be calibrated and validated against available experimental results, aiming at the analysis and interpretation of structural behaviour and the scientific exploitation of the results obtained.
Work Plan
The work plan comprises: (i) analysis of the available experimental results and identification of the phenomena and behavioural mechanisms to be reproduced numerically; (ii) definition of appropriate modelling strategies and constitutive models; (iii) development of three-dimensional finite element models using ABAQUS software; (iv) calibration and validation of the models through comparison with experimental results; (v) parametric studies to assess the influence of the main variables on structural behaviour; (vi) critical analysis and interpretation of the results obtained, with a view to their scientific dissemination; and (vii) a significant contribution to the preparation of the corresponding scientific manuscripts and their submission to leading international journals.
Contest Procedure
Applications must be exclusively submitted on the admissions platform of the Instituto Superior Técnico at https://fenix.tecnico.ulisboa.pt/fenixedu-admissions and requires registration and validation of the candidate's identity. Applications are only accepted when the form available in the platform is correctly filled, submitted and locked without any validation errors. The mandatory documentation to submit in the scholarship aplication includes:
- Curriculum Vitae
- Proof of Qualifications (or declaration of honor in case you do not yet have the certificate)
- Proof of Registration/Enrolment
The application submission deadlines can be viewed in the admissions platform.
The results of the contest will be made available in the same admissions platform

Selection process
Contest Evaluation Method(s)
Curricular evaluation weighted to 60% on a scale of 20 points.
Individual interview weighted to 40% on a scale of 20 points.
The minimum final grade needed for admission is 15 points.
Conditions for the Contest Evaluation
The Curricular Assessment (CA) will be graded on a scale from 0 to 20, considering the following criteria and respective weightings: academic background and suitability for the research fellowship topic (20%); experience in nonlinear numerical modelling of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures using ABAQUS software (40%); scientific track record and relevant scientific publications in the field (20%); and professional experience, particularly in specialised technical consultancy involving the analysis and modelling of concrete structures (20%). The Curricular Assessment score will be calculated according to the following expression: CA = 0.20 AB + 0.40 NM + 0.20 ST + 0.20 PE. The Individual Interview (II) will be graded on a scale from 0 to 20, considering the following criteria and respective weightings: technical knowledge of the finite element method, the behaviour of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures, and nonlinear numerical modelling using ABAQUS software (50%); discussion of scientific and professional experience relevant to the work plan (30%); and motivation, critical analysis skills, and suitability for the work plan (20%). The Individual Interview score will be calculated according to the following expression: II = 0.50 TK + 0.30 EP + 0.20 MS.
