Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Two (2) years of full-time experience in professional writing, fundraising proposal development, advancement writing, donor communications, fundraising communications, and/or related fields. Experience in higher education, large nonprofit, government or municipal environment, and/or healthcare organizations.

Preferred Qualifications:
At least one (1) additional year of experience in professional writing, fundraising proposal development, advancement writing, donor communications, fundraising communications and/or related fields. Experience with philanthropic communications, stewardship reporting, and donor cultivation strategies. Experience supporting major gift fundraising through donor-facing proposals and cases for support.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Stony Brook University Advancement Proposal Development Specialist supports major and principal gift fundraising by producing donor-facing proposals, cases for support, and solicitation materials. This role ensures fundraising proposals are accurate, persuasive, and aligned with Stony Brook University and Advancement priorities. The Proposal Development and Compliance Specialist collaborates with development officers and colleagues across Advancement to gather program details, budgets, and supporting information, while ensuring materials comply with gift rules and can be delivered on tight deadlines.

  • Proposal Development:
    • Write and edit a large volume of fundraising proposals, cases for support, short summaries, and solicitation materials.
    • Develop, adapt and customize content that clearly outlines funding needs, goals, and expected outcomes.
    • Ensure proposals are consistent in tone, style, and messaging, aligned with institutional priorities.
    • Confirm all proposals comply with fundraising guidelines, policies, and donor intent.
  • Project Management:
    • Plan, track, and manage proposals ensuring timely and accurate completion while proactively communicating updates to the team.
    • Projects will include but are not limited to:
      • Create and manage proposal templates, style guides, and boilerplate language to streamline production.
      • Partner with development officers to collect information and budgets needed for proposals.
      • Maintain organized systems to support efficient proposal creation across Advancement.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:
    • Partner with the Development team, Constituent Experience team and key stakeholders to collect and translate information into clear, proposal-ready language.
    • Provide proposal support that strengthens cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship efforts.
  • Growth/Development:
    • Seek opportunities for growth and learning to improve personal and team performance and contribute to the success of the organization. Share insights and best practices, and foster a culture of continuous learning within the team.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Special Notes:
The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
