Advising Support Specialist (Newark Campus)

The Ohio State University invites applications for the position of Advising Support Specialist at the Newark campus. The Ohio State University at Newark serves undergraduate students in over 200 Ohio State majors, including several that can be completed fully on the Newark campus. The Advising Support Specialist will advise students in specific assigned majors and may provide additional support to other students as appropriate.

The Advising Support Specialist is dedicated to fostering student success by implementing proactive advising strategies designed to help students remain on track toward achieving their academic goals. The Advising Support Specialist provides individualized advising to students, assisting them in selecting courses that align with their evolving academic and career interests. The position supports students in understanding and navigating university policies and procedures, program and degree requirements, and related academic matters. Assists students in navigating the university environment and makes referrals to various university offices that enhance the student experience, including academic, career, financial, and psychological resources. Develops competence by performing structured work assignments. Applies basic concepts, principles, and technical capabilities to perform routine tasks. Works on projects of limited scope and complexity; generally follows set procedures. Works under supervision and receives instructions. Exchanges information on routine matters and works under direction of senior staff.

Additional responsibilities include participating in orientation and recruitment activities to support undergraduate program engagement and enrollment. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to student development and a collaborative approach to student support services.

Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Preferred minimum years of relevant experience: 0-2.

Desired Qualifications:

  • 12 years of relevant experience in academic advising, student services, or a related field.
  • Ability to communicate basic ideas clearly and appropriately to meet diverse student needs.
  • Ability to articulate program requirements to various audiences, including students, parents, faculty, and campus partners.
  • Foundational relational skills, including active listening, interviewing/questioning techniques, and effective interpersonal communication.
  • Ability to perform basic transactions in the Student Information System (SIS).
  • Understanding and adherence to FERPA guidelines and confidentiality standards.
  • Basic knowledge and application of university and unit advising policies, such as drop deadlines, override requirements, petition processes, faculty rules, and registrar procedures.
  • General knowledge of academic advising principles, including general education, enrollment planning, changing demographics, and student success practices.
  • Knowledge of general education requirements and related learning outcomes.
  • Understanding of the units student demographics and ability to assess student progress toward degree completion.

This position is located at The Ohio State University at Newark. The target hourly salary range is $18.37 - $23.99.

Hybrid work schedule is available.

The Ohio State University at Newark offered its first classes in 1957 with a mission to provide affordable, open access to Ohio State for all Ohioans. The Newark campus sits on 188 acres and shares the campus with Central Ohio Technical College.
