ALCOHOL AND DRUG COUNSELING FACULTY
Job Description
Metro State University, a member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System, is seeking to hire an Assistant Professor. This is a full-time, probationary tenure-track position in the Human Services Department, beginning August 17, 2026.
Responsibilities:
- Effectively teach courses in substance use, mental health, and co-occurring disorders, at the undergraduate and graduate levels to a post-traditional student population that contribute to student learning.
- Develop high-quality curriculum in the substance use, mental health, and co-occurring disorders areas
- Serve as a core faculty in the Master of Science in Co-Occurring Disorders Recovery Counseling (MS CODC) program, teaching graduate-level courses and, as needed, teach undergraduate courses or fulfill other departmental assignments.
- Teach in-person and distance education courses (online asynchronous, online synchronous, hybrid, and flexible) as needed by the department, college, or university.
- Contribute meaningfully to the assessment of student learning at program and institutional levels.
- Engage in scholarly activity, creative achievement, and/or research. If there are particular areas of scholarly work desired, it should be listed here.
- Provide evidence of continuing preparation and study.
- Contribute to student growth and development through advising and assistance.
- Engage in service to the university and community.
- Demonstrate a commitment to serving a diverse student body by delivering a student-centered education and using approaches that support equitable outcomes for all students.
- Provide excellent learning environments through in-person, online, and/or hybrid course modalities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Earned a doctoral degree in counselor education or related discipline.
- Current unencumbered professional practice credential in addiction and/or mental health counseling.
- Demonstrated potential for success in teaching and professional service activities.
- A plan for scholarly activity, creative achievement, and/or research in the specified discipline(s), or related disciplines.
- Effective Communication skills (written verbal) to communicate with a variety of persons and groups.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in an institution with a culturally, economically, and linguistically diverse workforce and student population.
- Demonstrated ability and desire to work collegially with faculty and staff from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Specific Technical, Computer, and/or Software skills as needed.
Preferred Qualification
- Earned doctoral degree in counselor education from a CACREP-accredited program.
- Current unencumbered professional practice credentials in both addiction and mental health counseling.
- Demonstrated effectiveness teaching at a post-secondary level.
- Experience developing course curricula at a post-secondary institution.
- Demonstrated contributions to assessment of student learning at a post-secondary institution.
- Professional development and/or expertise in culturally responsive pedagogy, anti-racist pedagogy, and/or universal design.
- Experience as an academic advisor for students at post-secondary institution.

Description of College/School/Unit:
The Master of Science in Co-Occurring Disorders Recovery Counseling (MS CODC) program is housed within the Human Services Department in the College of Community Studies and Public Affairs. This program prepares students to navigate the increasingly complex challenges of addressing substance use, mental health, and co-occurring disorders through an integrated treatment approach that promotes recovery and overall well-being. The MS CODC program encourages students to deepen their professionalism, strengthen critical thinking, and remain grounded in self-awareness and self-care while pursuing their career goals. Faculty and staff aim to inspire students to bring renewed energy to the counseling profession, expand their leadership through clinical supervision and mentorship, and cultivate the ability to support the growth of others. This practice-oriented program is well-suited for current alcohol and drug counselors, other helping professionals seeking to add the ADC specialty, as well as those entering the counseling profession.
The School/Academic Department:
The Human Services Department was established as part of the university’s ongoing effort to provide high-quality educational opportunities to students seeking entry into human services careers. The mission of the Human Services Department is to prepare professionally and culturally competent students who integrate theory and practice in order to effectively deliver human services. The department stresses a flexible, student-centered approach, which includes multiple learning strategies, in meeting the needs of students from diverse backgrounds. Learning opportunities provide students with theoretical knowledge, practical skills, professional attitudes and application of knowledge through experiential learning. Our curricula emphasize advocacy, social justice, empowerment, and a strengths-based approach.
Salary:
Salary is commensurate with education and experience and is determined by the salary placement process as outlined in the Inter Faculty Organization (IFO) Master Agreement.
