American Museum Of Natural History

The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.

The American Museum of Natural History's Master of Arts in Teaching Earth Science Residency Program (MAT-ESRP) is seeking a part-time adjunct professor to co-teach EDU 640 - Methods and Assessments of Student Science Research, a graduate level course for urban pre-service secondary science teachers. The adjunct professor will collaborate and co-teach with another member of the MAT ESRP faculty.

EDU 640 - Methods and Assessments of Student Science Research is a 3-credit, 45 contact-hour course that meets for eight sessions. This course is designed for pre-service middle and high school Earth Science teachers in urban settings in NY State. It is designed to enhance the research experiences of aspiring Earth and Space Science teachers and to help them develop their understanding of the nature of science, the use of science tools and technologies, and how science is practiced and learned in high school and middle school classrooms through active research. This is a required course for the MAT ESRP. It is designed to include 36 hours of on-site teaching at the Museum (six 6-hour sessions offered during the day on Fridays between January and May and 9 hours of application in the school communities in which the residents are placed for their clinical experiences). In addition to co-teaching classes in person, the part-time adjunct professor will also be responsible for utilizing the online learning environment for posting the syllabus, course description, and schedule; and for providing resources, communicating with students, posting assignments with rubrics, and collecting and grading assignments.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Co-teach the Methods and Assessments of Student Science Research course.
  • Post the syllabus, course description and schedule to the online learning environment.
  • Collect assignments.
  • Assess with rubrics.
  • Provide educational resources.
  • Communicate with students.
  • Submit grades.

The expected salary for the Adjunct Professor is $141.81/hour. This position is overtime-eligible.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in education or another relevant field.
  • Experience in leadership positions in NYC public schools.
  • Bilingual/multilingual ability.
  • Experience publishing material related to the focus of the Methods and Assessments of Student Science Research course.
  • Knowledge of and experience with NYC schools.
