Animal Technician 3
Overview
Perform a variety of skilled animal husbandry duties and specialized services for animals and animal colonies, including properly housing animals, performing various procedures and skilled observation of animal conditions. Maintain general sanitation procedures as required. Weekend hours required; evening hours not required.
Work Schedule
Monday-Friday 7am-3pm for training (1st 12 weeks)
Friday-Tuesday 8am-4pm after training
**Must Pass YARC (Yale Animal Resources Center) Health Screening. ** This form is filed with Employee Health in a confidential file specific to employees who work at YSM Buildings. Offer is contingent upon successful passing of health screening.
Required Skills and Abilities
- Ability to follow YARC Standing Operating Procedure.
- Ability to recognize signs of well-being, illness and abnormalities.
- Ability to understand and use short notes, basic written instructions and forms; ability to understand complex and detailed protocols.
- General knowledge of computer use and ability to monitor email.
Preferred Skills and Abilities
Certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science.
Principal Responsibilities
- Observe and evaluate animals for signs of illness and stress and deviations in animal conditions.
- Feed, house and handle animals in accordance with institutional, local and Federal regulations.
- Perform animal care with veterinary oversight which may include specialized drug administration, sample collection, and pre- and post-procedural care.
- Maintain records of treatments.
- Provide husbandry and specialized services for animals in animal colonies.
- Maintain, sanitize and decontaminate animal rooms and facilities within low to moderate hazardous areas, e.g. BL2.
- Perform rodent euthanasia services according to established standards and practices and/or assist in non-rodent species euthanasia.
- Maintain required records according to institutional, local and federal regulatory standards.
- Serve as a source of information to investigators and support staff on animal handling, restraint, and pre- and post-procedural care or sanitation services.
- May train and/or instruct staff on sanitation, animal handling, restraint and care techniques appropriate to level.
- Perform periodic decontamination, maintenance and rotation of equipment in facility washing centers.
- Operate animal care processing equipment on either clean or dirty side and/or specific washing center; diagnose mechanical, technical and/or process problems.
- Maintain inventory of supplies.
- May act as a driver; operating vehicle in order to pick up and deliver animals and materials to assignment locations, applying proper animal handling and care protocols.
- Perform additional related tasks as necessary.
Required Education and Experience
Four years of work experience, two of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and a high school level education; or two years of work experience and an Associate’s Degree, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Physical Requirements
Ability to lift 50 pounds and good manual dexterity.
