Required: Experience in archeological work or studying at an accredited college or university in archaeology or anthropology; or a related field. Knowledge of archeological field techniques and scientific laboratory procedures. Ability to communicate effectively, collect and organize field data, the proper collection and storage of artifacts. Database entry (Excel or Access). Knowledge of ArgGIS (or QGIS or GRASS) and related data collection devices.

Preferred: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university or has completed coursework leading to a degree in archaeology or anthropology.

Primary Responsibilities:

Summary: Function: Performs entry-level archeological field, laboratory, and scientific research work that includes: Aid in collecting quality archaeological data, fieldwork, and paperwork. Perform archaeological surveys, testing, data recovery, and monitoring. Complete tasks promptly; coordinate with project managers regarding project requirements and expectations. Scope: Participating, planning, and executing archeological projects, conducting research and analysis, and monitoring construction projects.

Duties: Essential: Participates in archeological surveys and excavation projects: Ability to document archaeological sites and isolated finds. Ability to conduct shovel testing. Ability to use hand-held field technology (i.e., ArcGIS phone/tablet application paired with sub-meter GPS receivers). Ability to carry personal health and safety equipment (i.e., personal water, sunscreen, etc.). Ability to work in variable weather conditions (fluctuating temperatures and inclement weather, including heat). Ability to perform work duties independently and efficiently in a team setting. Ability to follow instructions and to make adjustments when provided feedback. Assists with maintaining inventory of archeological sites. Assists in the planning and execution of research designs and programs. Has completed coursework leading to a degree in archaeology or anthropology. Works under close supervision of the project director. The position is temporary and based on a project-to-project basis. The position is Security Sensitive.

About SRSU: Sul Ross State University Alpine Campus is in the Scenic Davis Mountains of West Texas, is a member of the Texas State University System, is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Associate, Bachelor’s, and Master’s degrees, and has an enrollment of approximately 2,000 students of campus in Alpine, Texas.
